Want to brush up on your shipping knowledge? Here are 5 fun facts about the shipping industry in Africa:

1. Africa Has Some of the World’s Busiest Shipping Lanes:

The Suez Canal (Egypt), which connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, handles 12% of global trade, including a huge volume of shipments to and from Africa. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope is a key alternative route when disruptions (like the 2021 Suez blockage) occur.

2. Nigeria & South Africa Dominate the Market:

Nigeria’s Lagos Port Complex and South Africa’s Port of Durban are among the busiest in Africa. Durban alone handles 60% of South Africa’s container traffic, while Lagos processes over 80% of Nigeria’s imports —despite notorious congestion!

3. Africa’s Shipping Industry is Growing Fast:

With rising e-commerce and intra-African trade (boosted by the AfCFTA—African Continental Free Trade Area), demand for shipping is surging. The continent’s container port traffic is expected to grow 5-7% annually — faster than the global average.

4. Piracy is Down, But Still a Challenge:

While piracy near Somalia has decreased (thanks to international patrols), West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea remains a hotspot, accounting for over 90% of global kidnappings at sea in recent years. Shipping companies must invest in security measures.

5. China Owns or Operates Many African Ports:

China has heavily invested in African ports under its Belt and Road Initiative, controlling major terminals in Djibouti, Kenya (Mombasa), and Cameroon (Kribi). This gives China significant influence over African trade routes.

Bonus Fact:

The MV Nile Dutch (a Dutch-African shipping line) once transported the heaviest cargo ever moved in Africa —a 1,200-ton oil rig—from South Africa to Angola.
