**Why Kaydee Has Been So Hard for Some Jackie Fans to Accept**🦅

For years, Jackie and Shadow weren’t just two Bald Eagles on a nest camera. For many viewers, they became part of everyday life — familiar faces watched through seasons, storms, challenges, and quiet moments.

When Jackie died in August 2026, the loss was deeply felt by the people who had followed her for so long. Then, not long afterward, Kaydee began appearing with Shadow and visiting the nest.

For some Jackie fans, seeing Shadow with another eagle has been painful. It can feel like the story they shared with Jackie ended too suddenly, before they were ready to let go.

But Kaydee isn’t replacing Jackie. Shadow and Kaydee are simply moving forward as wildlife does, while people take their own time to grieve.

**MAYA THE OSPREY MAY HAVE STARTED HER JOURNEY SOUTH 🦅💚**

Maya, the much-loved female Osprey at Manton Bay, may have begun her annual migration.

She flew east from the nest around 10:15 this morning and has not returned. After spending recent days around the nest following the departure of the two youngest chicks on August 21, the timing could mean Maya is now heading toward her wintering grounds in West Africa.

Maya returned to Manton Bay on March 24, arriving with a large trout, and it has been wonderful to see her healthy and active throughout the season. Male 33 remains at the nest area, apparently preparing for his own migration in the coming days.

If this was Maya’s final appearance of the season, we’re wishing her a safe journey. ❤️

🦅 Biologist Predicts Shadow and Kaydee Could Pair Up by Nesting Season

A veteran raptor biologist believes Shadow and Kaydee could potentially become a pair by nesting season. Pete Bloom, who helped band Kaydee, made the prediction on August 21, based on her size, behavior and repeated interactions with Shadow.

For now, that remains a professional prediction—not an official declaration from Friends of Big Bear Valley, evidence that the two have formed a reproductive pair, or a guarantee that they will nest together. Eagle behavior can change, and the coming months will provide more clues about their relationship.

JACKIE’S LEGACY LIVES ON IN THE HEARTS SHE TOUCHED 🦅❤️

There are so many questions after Jackie’s final flight—questions we may never be able to answer. Did she know how sick she was? Did she sense that her time was near? We simply don’t know.

What we do know is the impact she had.

Jackie brought people together from all walks of life. Millions followed her life, watched her family grow, and found moments of peace and connection through a wild eagle simply living as nature intended.

Her story also inspired people to care more deeply about wildlife and support conservation and rehabilitation efforts.

We cannot know what Jackie understood in her final days. But we can choose what her life means to us: compassion, connection, respect for wildlife, and a lasting reminder of the beauty of the natural world.

**🦌 Public Tip Leads to Arrests in Monterey County Deer Trapping Investigation**

A public tip helped California wildlife officers uncover an illegal deer trapping operation in the Monterey area. During their investigation, CDFW officers found blood, snares and drag marks indicating a deer had been killed and removed. Officers then conducted nighttime surveillance and, on July 13, detained two suspects while they were servicing illegal traps.

Investigators seized knives, antlers, four snares and deer meat as evidence. The suspects were booked into Monterey County Jail and face multiple wildlife-related charges, including unlawful method of take, hunting without a license, taking deer with a trap and hunter trespassing.

**🌅 A New Day in Big Bear Valley: Shadow & Kaydee Begin Another Morning**🦅

Another beautiful morning is unfolding in Big Bear Valley, offering another chance to glimpse the fascinating world of bald eagles through the nest cameras. After some sunrise chortles, Shadow and Kaydee were once again seen resting in the Roost Tree during the early hours. A beautiful flyby of the pair followed as they appeared to begin another day of exploring the valley.

During the non-nesting season, eagles can be more relaxed about territory and may gather where food is plentiful, becoming more social during this time. What Shadow and Kaydee do when they’re beyond the cameras remains a mystery—and part of what makes watching them so captivating.

JACKIE IS GONE. SHADOW IS MOVING FORWARD. 🦅

For years, we watched Jackie and Shadow share a nest, a territory, and a life together. Their bond became part of the story that so many people followed at Big Bear Lake.

Then, heartbreakingly, Jackie died.

Today, Shadow has begun moving forward with a new mate. For some people, seeing him with another female so soon may feel difficult to understand—or even painful. But this is where we have to remind ourselves that they are wild animals, not humans.

It is natural for us to place human emotions, expectations, and ideas about grief and loyalty onto animals we have grown attached to. But we cannot know exactly what an eagle feels simply by interpreting its behavior through a human lens.

Jackie is no longer here. Shadow is.

And life in the wild continues.

Curious Grizzly Cub Takes a Nibble of Photographer’s Boot in Rare Alaska Encounter 🐻❤️

Imagine photographing wild grizzly bears when a six-month-old cub decides to test if your footwear is on the menu!

That is exactly what happened to retired physician and wildlife photographer Bruce Robert Danz during a tour with Alaska Grizzly Safaris. While watching a mother bear and her cubs fish for salmon along a creek, one curious cub broke away and took a gentle bite of Danz’s boot.

Guided by expert safety coaching, Danz stayed calm, gave a quick nudge of his foot, and sent the little explorer scampering back to mom. The safari's owner noted it was the first time a bear had ever touched a guest in his 47 years of guiding!
