Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways launched services from October 31st while Gulf Air commenced flights from December 8, 2013. Qatar Airways launched operations on March 1st 2014. DWC welcomed more than 600 flights per week for a period of 80 days when both runways at Dubai International were undergoing a major refurbishment between May 1 and July 20, 2014. Phase 1 of DWC includes a single A380 compatible runway; a passenger terminal with capacity of 5 million passengers per annum (expandable to 7 million); a cargo terminal building with a capacity of 250,000 tonnes per annum (expandable to 600,000) and a 92-metre air traffic control tower. The airport will have a total of five parallel runways, 4.5km long, each separated by a minimum of 800m. DWC is designed to support aviation, tourism, and logistics well into the future.

Passenger traffic at DWC surged to 1.2 million during H1 2019, due to the transfer of some flights from DXB during the southern runway rehabilitation from April 16 to May 30.
More than 900,000 of the total traffic in H1 was recorded just during the 45-day period, which is equal to the airport’s entire annual passenger traffic in 2018. 🛫
