Ocean Network Express Christened its First Owned and Operated Newbuilding Vessel.

For the first time in Ocean Network Express’s (ONE) history, the company christened a newbuild vessel that they own and operate. The vessel, christened the ONE SPARKLE, strengthened ONE’s competitive position in the global maritime industry along with showcasing their commitment to sustainable practices.

The ONE SPARKLE was built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. It features an optimized hull design for increased efficiency, cutting-edge energy-saving devices, integration of smart technology on the vessel for optimizing performance, and a shore power connection for zero emissions at ports.

The vessel is a Singapore-registered container carrier that has a carrying capacity of 13,800 TEUs. The vessel is also dual-fuel compatible, being capable of operating on methanol and ammonia. This also makes the vessel future-ready as it can switch to these environmentally friendly fuels if required.

The ONE SPARKLE is one of a series of 20 vessels that have been placed on order by ONE in Korea and Japan. These vessels are expected to be delivered in 2025 and 2026.

COSCO Shipping Launches Methanol-Powered Vessel, Pioneering Green Shipping Innovations.

COSCO Shipping named its newest vessel, the COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, on 18th February in Yangzhou, China. The vessel is the first in a new series.

The vessel has a length of 366 meters, a beam of 51 meters, and a maximum loading capacity of 16,136 TEUs. The vessel is the first in a series of vessels that are being built by Cosco Shipping Heavy Industries. The vessel has been made as a product of thorough research, and the shipbuilder obtained 31 patents in relation to methanol technology during the design and construction of this vessel.

This has led to the vessel possessing many salient features, such as an innovatively designed methanol tank, which allows for the vessel to complete a one-way voyage between the Far East and West Coast of America utilizing methanol only. The vessel also features an intelligent ship system and has an excellent energy utilization ratio, establishing a benchmark in the shipping industry regarding energy conservation and emission reduction.

COSCO Shipping has emphasized that this affords them new possibilities for the optimization of green shipping routes.

Canadian government Approves 35.5 million CAD Grant for Developing Shore Power Facilities.

The Canadian Minister for Transport and Internal Trade announced a grant of 35.5 million CAD ($25 million) for the development of shore power facilities in the province of British Columbia in Canada.

The funding of 35.5 million CAD overall has been provided under the Green Shipping Corridor Program, which has been founded for increasing the usage of clean energy in the infrastructure at ports and terminals. Among others, the program has the objective of investing in the establishment of shore power infrastructure in port areas to reduce emissions from idling ships.

Three projects have received a total of 35.5 million CAD. First is the Greater Victoria Harbor Authority (GVHA), which will receive 22.5 million CAD to implement shore power equipment at the Ogden Point cruise terminal.

The second is Seaspan Ferries, which will receive an amount of 6.14 million CAD for implementing shore power equipment at four of its terminals, namely in Delta, Nanaimo, North Saanich, and Surrey.

The third and final entity to receive funding is the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA), which will receive 6.6 million CAD for upgrading the shore power infrastructure at the Canada Place Cruise Terminal, located at the Port of VANCOUVER.

Canadian LNG Production Facility Begins Operations.

LNG Canada, a liquefied natural gas production facility operated by Shell began operations on 22nd June. The facility, situated in Kitimat, British Columbia, now aims to load its first LNG cargo for export by the middle of this year.

The facility will have the significant advantage of having a reduced travel time to Asian markets compared to its US Gulf Coast counterparts.

At its full operational capacity, the site can produce 14 million tonnes per annum. However, as of now, only the Train 1 section is online and has a capacity of producing 5.6 million tons of LNG per year.

The new site is expected to reduce Canada's reliance on exporting LNG to the US, as it will provide another outlet for the product.

The first LNG cargo for export is to be loaded onto the vessel Gaslog Glasgow, which is scheduled to arrive at the facility on 29th June.
