Arriving in Yunnan region of China, the last one before Laos. It is becoming markedly more like South East Asia. The ethnicity of the people, the religion, the food and the landscapes are changing and we feel we are closing in on Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. Soon we will have endured the almost 8,000 km crossing China from Kyrgyzstan to Laos. Our team of 18 overlanders and our 2 Chinese guides have been amazing. Lifetime memories have again been created. ❤️❤️❤️

Crossing China is exhausting. With an average of about 300 km of drive per day over 30 days, we feel like rushing through with far too little time to explore. Food is amazing here, every single meal has been a success - even what looks like rather questionable street restaurants will deliver you a fresh, tasty and memorable meal - long live Asian food culture 😊

Dogs are the best. One of the many wonderful aspects of travelling by road is the number of dog you encounter on your journey. Almost every place you decide to spend the night, you will find new four-legged friends as soon as you arrive. As a token of appreciation, the welcome committee is thanked with a handful of the dog food reserve that we have decided to maintain in the truck. May many more encounters incur.

Testing the heights. Before hopefully one day reaching higher altitudes in Tajikistan etc., we wanted to test Lanmaru’s high altitude ability. So we found a wild camping spot at 3250 meter at Mount Aragats to give it a go. The Webasto diesel heater and diesel cooker worked smoothly with the high altitude kits kicking in. As we reached below zero degrees temperature during night and slept “upstairs” in the tent, the diesel heater ran almost all night at 18 degrees thermostat. Spending 24 hours “up there” with less oxygen in the air dropped both our blood oxygen levels by 5-6 %-points so a little dizziness appeared but nothing to call home about. We are ready for the Pamirs and Nepal !!! (as long as geopolitics and various pandemics allows).

We have arrived in Armenia. A country of old monasteries, delicious food and a troubled history. Also here people are super friendly and helpful. In Dilijan National Park we finally managed to hike a bit of the Transcaucasian Trail which stretches 3,000 km from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea - we decided though to limit our participation to the bit between Parz Lake and Gosh - still a great hike with magnificent views and more of those Caucasian wild horses.

Sno Valley stretches about 20 km eastwards from the Georgian Military Road to Kazbegi. There are some great hiking routes starting from the small village of Jira. We found a secluded wild camping spot where wild horses were roaming and local cattle drivers passed with their live stock early in the morning.

Truso Valley is a stunning gorge stretching many kilometres just south of Mount Kazbek. The area is great for hiking. But the weather is now turning autumnal with a rain shower from time to time so we better stick to some more established roads from here.

Gergeti Trinity Church is a spectacular sight in a dramatic Caucasus mountain setting. The site is located only a few km from the Russian border so we do a u-turn and retreat back down the valley towards Tbilisi.

We arrived in Georgia earlier this week and are now preparing for parking up the truck while we whisker off to Europe for a few weeks for some real life duties. A wonderful chance to bring home two bags of stuff we probably never should have brought on this journey 😊. Before leaving, the cruiser is given some TLC by the friendly team at Toyota in Batumi. A few questionable OBD codes were checked, lubrication of undercarriage, installing an original break pad clip instead of the temporary fix we did in Turkey, and finally fixed one of the rear shields of the OME BP51 shocks which had gone loose when encountering deep mud in Bulgaria. Toyota agreed to store the truck in their secured parking while we are away which is super helpful 👍 Can’t wait for our return to Georgia to explore more of this wonderful country. BTW - beware of the road cows which jumps at you around almost every corner !!!! No wonder it is called a bull bar.

10,000km and it is time for a tyre rotation. I found a tyre shop to give me a hand with the top spare tyre, a hydraulic jack and a wheel nut drill. Spare to back right, back right to front right, …. etc. This keeps an even wear of all tyres and allows you to check brake disks and pads reasonably regularly. This was a good thing as I found that the clip holding the two front right pad pins was missing and one of the pins were half the way out ! Temporary sorted with some handy wire until I can find a new clip somewhere. Now back on the road for the next 10K.
