The birding in Kruger this February was amazing - because of the lush conditions a lot of prey around. The brown snake eagle swooped down right in front of us on the road and demolished its prey in no time at all.

The reason we went to Rwanda was to trek the endangered Mountain Gorillas which reside in the Volcanoes National Park's Virunga Mountains. There are currently about 1000 left in the wild only - it is truly impossible to describe the feeling when you come across your DNA in the forest.
Treks start around 7.am and last until you find the Gorilla Group to which you have been assigned. Our treks (2) were vastly different . Small groups of 8 and you spend exactly one hour with the gorillas - it goes so fast.....The permits are very expensive but every cent goes back into conservation.
If its on your bucket list and you can afford it - simply do it 🦍

I had never heard of Golden Monkeys but when the manager at Sabyinyo offered my son the chance to trek these Old World Primates we took it and what an experience it was.

Being too young to trek Gorillas special permission was sought from the Warden of the National Park for my son as he was/is very mature and has spent every year in Africa since he was 11 months old.

With only 5000 of them left Golden Monkeys are considered endangered and can only be found in the Virunga mountains. Their lifespan is about 20 years with their main predator Eagles.

My son loved the opportunity to trek thru the jungle although at one point the altitude did make him feel ill but our guides were wonderful and helped him overcome the nausea. I love the look on his face when he sees his first GM. Truly a wonderful experience and much gentler on the pocket than gorilla permits.

Wilderness Sabyinyo — formerly known as Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge — is a luxury community-owned safari lodge in northern Rwanda, set in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, adjacent to Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans).

It was Rwanda’s first community-owned lodge, run in partnership with local trust SACOLA , which uses lodge revenue to support local socio-economic and conservation projects.

The property offers dramatic views over the Virunga range and rolling countryside and location wise is perfect being approx a 2 hour drive from Kigali and a 15 minute drive to volcanoes National Park HQ. Everything :- lodging, food, service, views, activities all 5 star and perfect for solo travellers, small groups or families. My son who was 8 at the time was captivated by the birds and chameleons in the garden and was invited to attend the Gorilla Doctors to learn about their important work.

A friend rang me last week to talk about trekking Gorillas In Rwanda. This conversation gave me cause to reflect on my trip to the Land of a 1000 Hills, so named because the entire country is covered in rolling green hills, steep valleys and high plateaus. I believe every city deserves the chance to show its secrets and so stayed 3 nights in Kigali the capital. most tours have you in and out. I will post my Gorilla and Golden Monkey photos tomorrow 🦍😲

Tears for a life lost and condolences to his beloved family. A life well lived and thanks that thru his incredible insight, diligence and conservation efforts we still have elephants in Africa.

Kenya: I sit here unable to formulate the words to explain how wonderful a Safari destination this country truly is.

I'll give it a go . I have been twice - first trip turned into a solo adventure as my travelling companion couldn't travel at the very last minute and I braved it alone. The only thing I did differently was organise transport in advance from airport to Hotel instead of winging it in a local taxi.
Everyone I met was so kind and I wish FB had been around then as I would have kept in contact . Second trip was with friends and family and what a joy that was.

Nairobi: So much to do and places of wonder to stay. I can recommend , and House - all totally different. Having a giraffe pop its head into your bedroom window is so amazing I had to stay at Giraffe Manor twice -2 nights preferable. If you can afford it - do it.
At Macushla House we all had breakfast in our pyjamas. Eat at Talisman one of best restaurants I have ever been to and poke around and the Masai Markets. for most amazing pashminas and shoes arrange a visit to the studio of Anna Trzebinski. Also, the fairytale of Kitengela Glass is worth hiring a driver to get there - its a interesting ride and you won't leave empty handed!

The Mara, Samburu ⭐️⭐️⭐️ just wow. I've stayed with Governors camp, &Beyond's Batleur and Kichwa Tembo Camps plus Saruni Samburu. Easy to get to - you cant go wrong.

If you have time go visit One Tribe Mamas Project in Nakuru which empowers vulnerable teen mamas to raise their babies with dignity. I will share more about this project soon.

A ex colleague contacted me this week asking for my advice on Kenya or Tanzania for a trip he is planning. This gave me the idea for a future post as they are BOTH such wonderful countries with many similarities but also differences that make them unique.
The only downside is that the currency is USD 💵for safaris and that makes either quite expensive for those visitors not from the USA 😢
Anyway here is a photo for now with some more to come
