A further 2 and a 1/2 hours today on Adelaide Stations Marble Hall. The level 1 balustrades are complete and I must say they look supurb. The fluted columns have been orientated correctly and the start of the walls to the groung level has commenced.

So how do you construct a model in 3D software you may ask?

I have a number of 2D plans and many reference photos to draw (no pun intended) upon to make a 3D model.
Firstly the 2D plan is imported into the drafting software, im my case Sketchup. The drawing has to be scaled up / down to the respective drawings scale bar or apropriate dimension found on the drawing.
Guidelines are then imposed over the top of the plan / plans where needed, and then with the tools provided in Sketchup, lines, rectangles, circles and arcs are placed on the reference plan and guidelines to produce shapes that are then extruded to make the respective building elements. Repeat 100's of times over and you start to get a building with many components.
The great thing with the software is that the components can be copied and edited as needed.
The last couple of photos show these steps to make the balustrades.

Another 4 hours down today working on the rooftop structures. However the planed works to roof came a cropper due to myself needing to know the correct placement central light well that contains the domed ceiling to the Marble Hall.
Well side quest chalenge accepted, lets draft up the Marble Hall with its ornate columns and domed ceiling. By commencing the Marble Hall drafting enables me to place the stairwells and balcony to the concourse.
Further drafting will take place over this long weekend to hopefully have the central lightwell and roofing completed.

Well time does certainly flys. I didnt think it has been since september 2024 though. I personally had lost interest in this mammoth undertaking for over a year.

I have got back into the groove again in the last 2 weeks with work on the roof taking precedence. The roof willbe modelled upon that presented prior to the 1985 ASER redelelopment and Skycity occupation of the upper levels of the station building. Once the roof has been completed, works on the ramp from North Tce will be completed.

A running tally of drafting works include:
North Elevation 40% complete
East Elevation 25% complete
South elevation 95% complete
West elevation 95% complete
Concourse 60% complete.
North tce ramp 45% complete
Roof and lightwells 30% complete

It has been a couple of weeks since the last post, but we have been busy. The reason for not keeping everyone updated on the model was due to the need to spend time in getting this portion of Adelaide's Railway Station completed for last weeks Modelling of the South Australian Railways convention. A yearly convention where like minded modellers from around Australia meet to listen to talks on the various modelling techniques, model making and on the 1:1 prototype.
The model so far is 10% complete with many more months to go till its completed. However the photo of the station which is completely drafted and 3d printed by myself is a homage of the real life station.

Been busy on work on my Adelaide Railway Station model over the last two weeks with today the first coat of paint being applied.
The portion of the station presented here is obviously the south eastern corner where the ramp to the concourse is located.
The model is made up of eleven individual components that have been 3d printed in resin over three print sessions totalling 25 hours in print time.
A long way to go but happy with the outcome sofar.

Not alot to report over the last 2 weeks.

However I have realised not to follow what has been published on the original Garlick & Jackson plans. After a visit to the station last week, I noticed that the Garlick & Jackson western elevation plan show 11 windows to the left of the centre on the building and 10 windows on the right side. What was built However has 10 windows either side.

This is highlighted in the photos below The red circles highlight the windows either side with the windows. Luckily this change has only set me back by 1 hour.

Thanks must go out to Des Egan for providing a number of additional plans that will assist with this build.

Further progress on the drafting of Adelaide's Railway Station. Works on the entry on the southern elevation and the canopies is complete and the south eastern corner approximately 80% done.

What is of interest is the subtle changes that have been made to the railway station during construction and its almost 100 years in use. These changes include the number of columns to the canopies, and the infill of light wells by the main entry.

Work is still progressing on the drafting of the various components of the Adelaide Railway Station. Works completed since the last post include:

1) Drafting and placement of the circular columns to the western elevation railway platform.
2)Commencing drafting of the Western elevation canopy.
3) stairs to North Terrace completed
4) the latest and most tedious being the redrafting of the entire 370 foot ceiling and the curved arches. I wasn't quite happy with the 1st attempt to the arched window curved ceiling..

To date there are some 130 individual components that make up this model so far with 46 3d printed parts. At 11 hrs per print, there will be approximately 500 plus hours of 3d printing ahead.
