Ever had a wonderful Japanese dinner cooked on top of an historic clay roof tile washed down with prestigeous local saké? I have, in a tiny family-run bar in Nagano city and it was a fantastic experience!

Zenkō-ji is a famous Buddhist temple located in the city of Nagano, Japan. The temple was built in the 7th century and is one of the few remaining pilgrimage sites in Japan. A must see site when visiting Nagano.

I was so fortunate to be able to briefly go skiing at Togakushi near Nagano last week. First time in 10 years or so. The weather was perfect, the snow so soft, the hire equipment quality was excellent and the runs were uncrowded. We basically skied straight down from the top of the mountain onto the skilift and back up again. I could not have had any more fun. It was perfect! i think my face says it all.

One of the wonderful relaxing experiences when travelling in Japan is staying at a traditional ryokan (Japanese Inn). Masuya Yushinan in Shibu Onsen (Nagano Prefecture) was beautiful. There are a variety of room types and I was fortunate to stay in a suite here Most ryokan have onsen (hot spring baths separate male and female areas) to enjoy too. A must do experience in Japan.

The snow monkeys (Japanese macaques) of Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park in Nagano are world famous. Only here can you see such cute animals enjoying the onsen just like humans. I have arranged for clients to visit, but it is the first time for me to see them. Accessible from Nagano city and nearby ski resorts it is very social media friendly. Note however at times it can get very crowded with tourists and also there is a 30min walk up the valley to get there.

This week I have been travelling in the vicinity of Nagano in the central mountains of Japan and the to Kanazawa on the northern coast.
I am delighted to share some wonderful new experiences I did. Let's start with the Kamakura villlage in the town of Iiyama. With everything snowbound and the farmers unable to work on the land, they set up these cute igloos where tourists can come and have a hot pot inside the ice hut with toboggan rides outside for the kids. It's really cute and very enjoyable.

MIYAZAKI Prefecture (part 2): There is a typhoon off the coast causing some waves and rain today but it is still warm and didnt spoil our trip to Aoshima at all. This is a very unique shrine on an island just off the coast just out of Miyazaki city This was our final stop before heading to Miyazaki airport for our trip home.
It been absolutely amazing and I sincerely thank the organisers from five prefectures for the opportunity to experience so much the wonderful island of Kyushu. 32 trips to Japan and there are still so many new experiences to explore. MIYAZAKI Prefecture (Part 1): We did a lot of driving today through very picturesque countryside to arrive at a very sacred place - Amatoiwato Shrine where the sun -goddess Amaterasu hid in a cave. We tried kappa-dori for lunch (chicken cooked in bamboo on a barbecue) - incredibly delicious! Then onto the famously stunning Takachiho Gorge. Dinner was at a yakiniku (grilled beef) restaurant in the city of Miyazaki.
