We then realised the service could be expanded to include others coming to stay in the region who wanted to do the same. Eventually, Roger was able to give up his full-time job to concentrate on the and and we bought a more suitable vehicle for the purpose. We both went to driver training to gain as as this was important to us. This assures our guests that we meet the quality and standards set by DPTI. These qualifications are your assurance that we operate a registered, fully insured and reputable business. We've had a few vehicle changes over the years but the first one is pictured below. We later sold the B&B but continued the touring business and I was to I able to give up my full-time work late in 2019 to work in our business and we now have two 7 seater vans. 🖤🍷 A Bold Tasting at Hugh Hamilton Wines with Ambler Touring 🍷🖤
Today we ventured to one of McLaren Vale’s most distinctive cellar doors — Hugh Hamilton Wines, where tradition meets bold innovation.
Perched above the vineyards in their iconic circular tasting room, our guests enjoyed panoramic views and a guided tasting of Hugh Hamilton’s signature wines, including The Black Blood Shiraz series, The Rascal, and The Scallywag. Each wine was rich in flavour and full of character — just like the Hamilton family themselves.
As Australia’s oldest wine family, the Hamiltons have been making wine for over 180 years, with six generations shaping the winemaking history of the McLaren Vale region. Hugh himself brings a flair for storytelling and experimentation that shines through in every drop.
🍇 The experience is equal parts education, history, and fun — perfect for wine lovers looking to taste something both grounded in heritage and daringly different.
Thanks to Ambler Touring for the smooth ride and another memorable day in South Australia's stunning wine country! 🚐✨

Our latest stop with Ambler Touring brought us to the iconic Wirra Wirra Vineyards — a place where history, passion, and premium wines come together in unforgettable ways.

Guests were treated to a tasting experience at the cellar door, sampling a superb lineup of wines from the approachable and beloved Church Block blend — rich, smooth and perfectly balanced — to their flagship ranges like the RSW Shiraz and Angelus Cabernet, showcasing Wirra Wirra’s dedication to craftsmanship and regional character.

🍇 For those wanting more than a tasting, Wirra Wirra also offers exclusive behind-the-scenes tours, giving visitors an inside look at the winemaking process and the storied legacy of founder Greg Trott — a larger-than-life character whose spirit lives on in every barrel and brick of this remarkable estate.

CRAFERS, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
1913

It looks like a cold winter’s day in Crafers in 1913. What draws the eye in this photograph—aside from the sturdy form of the Crafers Hotel—is the quiet moment it captures in South Australia’s changing landscape. Parked in front of the Hotel are three very different modes of transport: an early-model automobile, a horse-drawn carriage, and a stagecoach. It’s a striking glimpse into a moment of transition—from the age of horses to the era of engines.

The Early Days of Crafers — From Sawyers’ Arms to Crafers Hotel, based on the 1939 book, "The History of Crafers"

The story of the village of Crafers begins with a modest bush inn known as the Sawyers’ Arms—but more often called “Crafer’s Place in the Tiers.” In those early days, “The Tiers” was the common name for the Mount Lofty Ranges, a heavily forested region officially referred to as the “Stringy Bark Forest”. It had a notorious reputation at the time as a haven for fugitives and lawless men, adding an edge of danger to the rugged beauty of the area.

In 1839, David Crafer took out a publican’s licence for the Sawyers’ Arms. The licence lists the address as “Road to Mount Barker”—a key route through the Adelaide Hills and the main track to both inland settlements.

Though basic in construction—little more than a thatched bush hut with a mud floor—the Inn offered warm food, a place to rest, and stabling for horses. Crafer and his wife were known for their attentiveness and hospitality. Mrs Alfred Watts described the building as “a poor place” but noted the comfort and care provided to weary travellers.

By 1840, David Crafer had replaced the original hut with a more substantial building. He renamed it the Norfolk Hotel, honouring his birthplace in Norfolk, England. Though the official address remained “Stringy Bark Forest”.

In 1842, David Crafer sold his Hotel and moved to Adelaide, where he died shortly after.

By 1844, under the licence of Richard Dixon Hawkins, the Hotel became known as the Crafers Inn, and it eventually became known as the Crafers Hotel.

From its humble beginnings as a rest stop to the heritage-listed Hotel that stands today, this corner of the hills has been welcoming visitors for more than 180 years. And that 1913 photo? It captures more than just a winter’s day—it’s a snapshot of progress parked in front of a place steeped in memory.
