Day 4 - Following the Journey from Tree to Finished Furniture 🇮🇩

Today was one of those days that reminds me how much work goes into creating quality furniture.

I visited several very different businesses that each play an important role in the process.

First was a finishing workshop where furniture receives its final sanding, staining, colouring, and protective finishes before heading to customers.

Then I visited a large-scale chair manufacturer producing commercial-quality seating suitable for restaurants, cafĂŠs, resorts, hotels, and large projects.

The precision and consistency required when producing furniture at this scale is impressive.

Later in the day I spent time with a reclaimed timber craftsman who transforms old timber into beautiful furniture pieces full of character and history.

One piece of timber can have a previous life spanning decades before being given a new purpose.

I also stopped by a sawmill and spent some time looking at the raw timber itself.

It’s fascinating to see furniture at every stage of its journey—from the log, to the milling process, to construction, finishing, and finally into someone’s home, business, hotel, or restaurant.

Most people only ever see the finished product.

This week I’ve been fortunate enough to see everything that happens before that.

Day 3 - Behind the Scenes of Sourcing

Today is all about materials, home dĂŠcor, and supplier visits.

One thing I’ve learnt after years of sourcing in Indonesia is that the finished product is only as good as the materials that go into it.

So today I’ll be looking at fabrics, finishes, home décor collections, and visiting another furniture maker to check quality, craftsmanship, and what’s new for the coming season.

This is the part most people never see.

Before furniture arrives in a showroom or a customer’s home, there are countless decisions about materials, construction, finishes, colours, and quality standards.

I’ll be sharing some of the products and suppliers I discover throughout the day, along with a few behind-the-scenes moments that show what sourcing trips are really like.

For those planning ahead 👇
The next container is scheduled to leave in 2–3 weeks, so we’ll need goods ready for cargo around the 25th. As one lands, the next will be preparing to load.

We will also have another container departing at the end of May.
