Day 15 Dubai - we booked a half day tour around Dubai. It helped with keeping the anxiety away as I was beginning to think we might be stuck here because the airspace may close due to the conflict with Iran and Israel and the US.
We were both blown away with the wealth in Dubai. It would be nice to visit Abu Dahbi another time. We learnt a lot from our tour guide about Dubai and the conflict in the Middle East. We learnt 200 different nationalities live in Dubai and only the locals pay tax over there and it’s only 9%.
We visited the largest Mall in the world until China made a bigger one. It was beautiful with all the marble and the toilets were even worth a look each having it’s own painting in the cubicle. It even had an Aquarium in the mall with sharks and coral and fish.
We learnt that almost all of the buildings were made by EMAAR. We seen the tallest building in the world - Burj Khalifa which is 828m high. Atlantis is a large complex in the shape of a palm tree built on a man made island. We also visited the Dubai Marina.

Looking on the bright side we got to see abit of Dubai and can see it would be a good stopover on the way to Europe. It was 40 degrees but the buildings have fantastic Air Conditioning.

Emirates is our new favourite airline now with premium economy and the meals better than any airline we have travelled with. They looked after us when we were delayed.

We used Google maps and public transport in Spain and Lisbon and taxis or cabify or uber when we needed to go to the airport or train station. We really must learn to travel lighter as we only wore half of what we took with us.

A better time to travel South of Spain would be April-May as it was very hot. Always book the main attractions months ahead if you do decide to travel in summer.

Day 14 Dubai - we left Lisbon and flew to Dubai. Our stopover in Dubai turned out to be 24hrs due to Emirates rerouting our trip for our safety. Emirates were great tho they put us up in the Grand Mercure Hotel and covered our meals.

Day 13 Lisbon - we spent our last day in Portugal doing a Walksdevour food tour in the morning. Then we hopped on tram 28 to visit Castello de Sao Jorge and see more of Lisbon including the Time Out Market and Pink St. I loved all the tiles on the buildings and it was fun riding the tram. I liked all the food including the salted cod. Dean didn’t like the cod. It is strange to eat fish that has not been cooked and salted for days. The Portuguese also eat lots of sardines. We both liked the bifana (pork) rolls.
We tried the Ginjinha which is like a port but didn’t enjoy it.
The famous Portuguese tarts were our favourite.
We finished the day with a lovely seafood dish with octopus. They really know how to cook octopus over here.
We finish our trip in Lisbon and head home tomorrow.

Day 12 Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cascais
We did a Get your Guide tour to Sintra and to the coast to see a Portuguese beach. The palace (Pena) was beautiful and definitely instagram famous. We had a paddle in the water at Cascais. It looked like a nice place to stay. You can easily catch the train to Sintra and Cascais from Lisbon but as we only have 3 nights here I chose the tour. We loved this tour.

Day 11 Lisbon, Portugal - we normally travel between cities by train but there is no train that takes you from Seville to Lisbon so it was a 6.5hr bus trip. It wasn’t so bad as we both slept a lot of the trip.
We swapped hotels for an Airbnb in Lisbon which worked out to be in a great location in the centre of Lisbon.
We decided to buy a 24hr public transport pass which allowed us to use buses and trams for 6 euro. We decided to catch the tram which took us to Belem (Portugal’s name for Bethlehem) alongside the river. We seen the famous Monastery getting repaired, the tower of Belem, the famous bridge that is similar to the bridge in San Francisco and the Monument to the Discoveries.

Day 10 Zahara de la Sierra, Setenil de las Bodegas and Ronda (White Villages and Ronda tour with Get your Guide)
We had a lovely day visiting 3 beautiful towns in the mountains. All very different.
The first town was a beautiful little friendly town with about 1000 people living there.
The next town had a bull fighting ring and they only have one there in September each year. I think they are trying to stop it because of the cruelty to the bulls. Our tour guide showed us a video and it is so horrible. I would never support this.
We walked to see the beautiful old bridges and then went to a very popular tapas bar for lunch.
Ronda, our last town was where the houses were built into the mountains. We went for a big walk around the town to see the beautiful view of the mountains.
It was a wonderful tour that I would recommend.
After our tour we went back to our hotel for a swim before going out for dinner. Everyone was watching the football game between Spain and France. We finished our last day in Spain with a horse and cart ride. Unfortunately we missed the last tram so we had to walk back but it was entertaining seeing how everyone celebrated the win - singing and dancing in the streets and honking their horns.
I wish we were staying to see the final.

Day 9 Seville - we visited the Alcazar. This palace is 1000 years old and had 4 dynasties live there so there are 4 different styles in the palace. We did the walksdevour tour - Alone in the Alcazar early access tour. It was my favourite historic site we have visited in Spain. The tours are great because you learn so much history. The gardens are beautiful and there is a cafeteria in there so you can sit and enjoy the gardens whilst having lunch.
After lunch we visited the Gothic Cathedral. It was huge inside. It cost $13 euro to go inside but I think it was worth it. I also climbed the tower and got some beautiful views of the city.
We walked to see Plaza de Espana after the cathedral. They had the seats and stage setup ready for the festival so we never got the best views however it was definitely worth a visit. There is no cafes or anything there, just a beautiful historic building.
We went for a walk to the river and watched the sunset and had a late dinner. It’s normal for the Spanish to eat dinner from 9pm.
Seville reminded Dean on Florence as it has a river running through it. We didn’t see the port but the big cruise ships come in through the river bringing 5000 tourists which is why you hear the Spanish don’t like the tourists. We were suppose to be on the cruise ship this year but decided to postpone it as we thought our flights would be cancelled. I am glad we have done it this way as you truly get to experience the culture and food when you stay in the hotels and eat at the local restaurants.

Day 7 Nerja and Frigiliana
We went on a day trip to see Costa del Sol. It reminded me of Greece. The beaches were crowded as it’s very popular in Nerja. We also visited the Nerja Caves.

Day 6 Madrid - we went on another food tour in Madrid with walksdevour. The mistake we made was having breakfast before we went. We ate churros, olives, cheeses, Iberian ham, empanadas and calamari roll. After the 2.5hr food tour that took us to 2 different parts of Madrid Dean and I walked to see the Cathedral and Palace again. Then we went back to pickup our bags and hopped on the train to Granada. We met a lovely lady from Granada who told us where to eat and what we should see whilst there. Her recommendation for Tapas was the best. Spain was playing Belgium in football (FIFO) and won so everyone was very happy.
In Barcelona and Madrid if you ordered a drink you may get some olives or nuts. But in Granada don’t order food because the tapas that comes is almost a meal on it’s own. I would recommend “Los Manueles” for tapas. They have been open since 1917 and there are 4 of them in Granada. The food and service was excellent.
