Some people get stuck behind a caravan on the Bruce Highway… 😅

Andrea got lucky and passed our new loco as it made the trip from Mackay to Bowen. Not many people can say they've overtaken a locomotive on the highway. 😜🚂

Gary, Luke, Brandan and Mandy had a great time at Queens Beach State School , Merinda State School and St Mary's Catholic School, Bowen talking to students about all things rail safety, including staying safe around tracks and what to do at level crossings.

Thanks to the schools for having us, and to every student who submitted their masterpiece. We all know a safety message lands a lot harder when you've coloured it in yourself. These kids have out Picasso'd themselves, so like and comment on your favourite to vote. 🗳️

It’s Rail Safety Week and we want to level with you – no shortcut, distraction or moment of impatience is worth risking a collision with a train. Across Australia there are almost 950 near misses at level crossings every year. Someone trying to beat the lights, roll through a give way sign, or looking down at a phone at almost the wrong moment.

What people don't always realise is how little the driver can do about it. One of our loaded train weighs about the same as 3,600 LandCruisers, takes over a kilometre to pull up, and it can't move off the track to get around you. By the time a train driver has seen you, they've already done everything they can do.

Take the extra thirty seconds, don’t be distracted, be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to the signals and signs

Never take a chance with a train.

🗓️ Why have a week, when you can have a whole month! Rail Safety Week OFFICIALLY kicks off next Monday, but we’re getting in early to make sure you're all on track when it comes to being . 🚂

First up, let's talk about the network itself. Did you know the rail corridor is much more than just the tracks? It includes the land right either side of them, roads, crossings and safety barriers that are there to keep people safe.

It might look empty, but that doesn't make it a shortcut, a bike track or a spot for backyard cricket.

Staying safe also means staying alert, so keep your eyes up and your phone down. Distractions are just as dangerous as ignoring the danger zone itself. 📵

Yep, that’s right we’re on the lookout for Qualified and Trainee Train Drivers. Whether you're starting from scratch or you've already got your train ticket 😉😉, we’ve got the role for you. Trainees train alongside our experienced drivers, working towards a Certificate IV in Train Driving and learning the ropes from people who know the network inside out. Qualified drivers join straight onto the crew and get stuck into it from day one.

Locomotive. Train. Consist. Three words that we throw around a lot, and if you’re not in the rail industry (or a foamer 💁‍♀️), they can sound like the same thing, so all aboard for a quick track-talk lesson!

First up, the locomotive. This is the powerhouse, the engine, the thing doing all the heavy lifting. It’s got enough grunt to move itself down the track with nothing attached, no wagons, no worries.

Now hook some wagons onto that locomotive and bang, you’ve got yourself a train.

Consist is where it gets a bit more interesting. It’s the composition of a train, the specific combination of locomotives and wagons.

It takes a real payload of concentration to run a consist from the Carmichael mine to the North Queensland Export Terminal, day in, day out.

You're not just managing two locomotives on a train stretching 1.4km and carrying about 7,000 tonnes of coal. You're constantly liaising with network control, watching for anything near the track, and staying locked in for hours straight, all while adhering to highest safety standards.

There's no room to lose track of what's going on, so what's the signal for a great train driver? 👇

You could say we have a one-track mind. 😏 Get the coal from the Carmichael mine to the North Queensland Export Terminal. And like any train journey, there's a start and an end point, but there are no stations for us. Just load-out and in-loading facilities.

The 300km+ trip starts at the Carmichael mine's Train Load Out (TLO), where each wagon in the consist moves beneath a large surge bin before coal is precisely loaded.

At the other end, when the train arrives at the North Queensland Export Terminal's, the bottom-dump wagons automatically open as they roll through the train in-loading facility. This allows the coal to fall through heavy-duty grates into underground hoppers before being carried onto stockpiles by conveyor.

It’s not the trip you'd find in many travel brochures, but it's a pretty impressive journey all the same. 🚆

Smile, you're on Candid Camera! 🐾

Looks like our locals love being the stars of the show, and along the Carmichael Rail Network there’s no shortage of sets. The CRN has seven different types of fauna crossings, each designed around the animals that use them and the places they like to roam and call home.

The crossings are fitted with cameras so we can keep an eye on things every week, and they end up catching some absolute gold. No posing, no filters, and not a single one of them asking to see the photos before we post. 📸🤳
