Ayva grew up at Dingo Beach with a love of the ocean and science and now she's turning that passion into a career. 🌊

Ayva is the first recipient of the NQXT x JCU: James Cook University, Australia's Whitsunday Futures Education Grant and will be undertaking some hands-on work experience with our team doing water monitoring and other environmental programs. 🐠🔬

Pretty cool when what we do every day becomes someone's career inspiration.

Applications for the next round of the grant are open and close 29 May 2026. If you know a local student from Bowen, Airlie Beach, Proserpine or Collinsville studying Environmental Science, Marine Science, Geology or a related field, send them this way.

Dive in with a did you know?! Our underwater structures – such as pilings, docks, and pipelines – are more than just essential components of the North Queensland Export Terminal; they serve as thriving marine habitats.

These structures offer shelter, breeding grounds, and surfaces for algae and other organisms to grow and support a healthy and diverse marine ecosystem. The waters around NQXT are rich in sea life and it’s not uncommon to see squadrons of twelve or more manta rays gliding through the waters.

We run an annual Marine Sediment Monitoring (MSM) Program every year where samples
are collected from up to 27 locations near offshore infrastructure. These samples are then analysed by a NATA-accredited laboratory, following strict Queensland and national environmental guidelines.

And the good news? The data collected since 2014 backs it up, showing the controls we have in place are doing exactly what they’re meant to 👌 📊

Every ANZAC Day we stop to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who have pulled on the uniform in service of our nation.

Special thanks to the former servicemen and women in our team. We’re proud to work alongside you.

Lest we forget.

Grease is the word 🕺

But this isn’t about slick hair and leather jackets… it’s about the kind of change you don’t always see, but that makes a real difference 😉

Over the past five years we’ve replaced the old drum system for a refillable POD setup, and it’s been a game changer.

No more bulky drums, pallets, or unnecessary plastic. Just a cleaner, simpler setup that keeps things moving with far less waste. It’s also taken a lot of the heavy lifting out of the job, with one POD able to do the job of multiple drums, and that means safer and easier work for our team.

Better for our people, better for the environment and a smarter way to get the job done 👌

Operational update from Abbot Point Operations 📣

Our stockpiles are getting a sweet upgrade. We’re officially moving from coal to chocolate, just in time for the Easter Bunny’s biggest shipment yet 🐰

We’ll keep exporting as planned, but throughput might take a hit this time of year… quality control has been pretty hands on 🍫😅 😋

This month we’re shining a light on the people who help create safer, more respectful and more inclusive workplaces, including the dads, stepdads and mentors who lead by example.

One of these people is Bill, a shift electrician here at APO. He keeps the terminal running, responds to breakdowns, and makes sure the plant stays productive. But the part of his story we love most is the impact he has at home.

His stepdaughter Elle has grown up watching women succeed in apprenticeships and trade roles here. That visibility has shaped her confidence and her career goals. She is resilient, outgoing, funny and completely unbothered by anything. And yes, she already has her eye on a future in the trades – we’re lucky enough to have her as part of our team while she completes a school-based traineeship.

Bill hopes she finds a workplace with the same positive culture he has seen here. One where her attitude and willingness to learn matter more than outdated ideas about who belongs in a trade.
He wants young women to know the biggest misconception is that they cannot handle the physical side of the job. In his experience, the best apprentices are the ones who show up with the right mindset and eagerness to grow.

Outside of work, Bill volunteers in the community, spends time boating and fishing and travels with his family to dog shows. He is even training to become a conformation judge.

This International Women’s Day we celebrate women like Elle who are stepping into their futures with confidence, and we celebrate allies like Bill who help make those futures possible.

This month, we’re celebrating the women who keep APO running, including Fiona, one of our long serving Production Operators who’s been part of the team for 17 years.

She joined us in 2008 and proudly became APO’s first female Production Operator. If it moves, loads, unloads or needs tying up, she has probably had a hand in it. Heavy machinery, plant checks, ship work, she has done the lot.

Her path here was not exactly planned. After Year 12 she worked in seedling sheds, chased the dream of station life, spent time mustering, then headed to the mines. Eventually a job came up at Abbot Point and she grabbed it – and (luckily for us!) she has never looked back.

Along the way she has raised three kids, taken maternity leave, returned with flexible hours and built a career she genuinely loves. She will tell you straight that the support she has within the APO team meant she never had to choose between work she enjoys and being present for her family.

She credits her mum and her Nanna for showing her what real strength looks like. Her mum could outwork anyone in the paddock or the kitchen, and her Nanna grew up doing the hard jobs long before modern conveniences existed. Tough women who just got on with it.

Her message for young women starting out is simple and powerful: Be yourself. Back yourself. If you think you can do it, do not stand back. Have a go. We’re all in this together.

In 2025, APO purchased and donated two specialised satellite tags to support local turtle research — and one of our talented contractor carpenters even built the custom “turtle box” needed to safely hold the turtles while the tags are secured.

Designed by Julie from North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation the box helps keep a female turtle still and comfortable after laying, so the satellite tag can be attached without stress.

During regular turtle monitoring by the Juru people, a female flatback turtle came ashore. The sand was too dry for nesting, so she returned toward the water, and that’s when the team safely boxed and tagged her. The crew affectionately named her Myrtle.

Since then, Myrtle has been happily pinging her location as she goes about her turtle business, with the team even capturing data as she returned to nest again later in the season – the data was able to show she came to nest three times at two-week intervals – how cool is that?

The tag provided 5 weeks of data, giving researchers valuable insight into where flatback turtles travel after nesting and how we can better protect them.

What a great example of teamwork between APO, NQBP, and the local monitoring program, and a very cool moment for everyone involved.

On Friday we celebrated International Women’s Day with a special morning tea.

This year’s theme, , was all about generosity, support and collaboration — and it was great to see that reflected in the room.

We heard from three of our own who shared their experiences and career journeys:

✨ Danielle – (you may recognise her from last week’s post!) is recently seconded from Logistics Planner to Maintenance Support Officer and embracing the challenge
✨ Shelley – our long‑standing Payroll Officer (and let’s be honest, one of the most important people on site 😉).
✨ Lesley – only 6–7 months in and already making an impact, moving from Mechanical Engineer to Maintenance Improvement Lead.

It was a relaxed, meaningful morning and a good chance to connect, reflect and celebrate the people who make our workplace what it is.

For International Women’s Day (and throughout the month of March), we’re celebrating the women who keep APO moving starting with Danielle AKA Dee, our Maintenance Support Officer. Dee is currently leading key maintenance improvement projects on a 12 month secondment from her usual role as a Logistics Planner.

She has been a part of the APO family since 2020 after a career in sales at Visy. Dee joined the team keen to grow her skills in freight, transport, and the wider supply chain.
One of her proudest moments so far? Completing the NQBP Women in Leadership Course (2025).

Outside work, you’ll find her courtside or poolside cheering on her girls in netball, softball and swimming — or out shopping and catching up with friends and family. Hidden talents? She says none… unless talking too much counts (which we say it does - the gift of the gab is most certainly a talent!).

Inspired by many women (with Ash Barty topping the list), she shares one message for young women starting out: say yes to opportunities, even the unexpected ones. They might take you somewhere great.

It might not be International Women’s Day yet, but this month we’re taking the time to highlight the incredible women and girls both at APO, and in our local community.

Recently, APO was proud to help bring the Bowen Summer 10s Women’s Competition alive through funding from our Community Support Program.

By supporting local sporting pathways, we’re creating opportunities for women to build their skills and confidence, both on and off the field.

Throughout March, we’ll be sharing some amazing stories about the women of APO, as well as the men in our team who are inspired by the women in their families. Stay tuned!
