πŸ“ˆ Road deaths in Australia are still rising β€” but we still don’t know why.

In the 12 months to 30 April, 1,333 people died. That's 3.5% higher than in the previous corresponding period.

Last week, the Federal Government announced new funding for road safety research. The AAA looks forward to more details on the data-driven approach that the Government intends to fund, and to working with them to reverse the trend.

1,333 people died on Australian roads in the 12 months to 30 April 2026 β€” a 3.5% increase on the previous year, with pedestrian deaths up 9.9%, cyclist deaths up 9.3% and passenger deaths up 10.8%.

That’s why we’re a partner of National Road Safety Week, to raise awareness of road trauma and ways to reduce it.

The AAA welcomes first steps on road safety and Real-World Testing in the 2026–27 Budget β€” but funding cuts and missing tax reform mean motorists are still paying the price.

Budget at a glance:
βœ… Real-World Testing of light vehicles funded for another year
βœ… Road safety programs boosted
βœ… Long-overdue investment in fuel security

❌ $3.8 billion cut to road investment funding
❌ Only 70% of fuel excise reinvested in the transport network over the next four years
❌ No plan for sustainable road funding reform

πŸ“Š New data reveals a continuing rise in Australian road deaths - the 34th consecutive month that the rolling 12-month toll has increased.

With no clear reason why, the 2026–27 Federal Budget must fund a pilot no-blame investigation into road deaths.

We can't fix what we won't properly examine.

⚑ How far do electric vehicles really go?

The latest independent testing reveals how EVs perform in real-world Australian conditions, compared to their mandated lab tests.

Of the small SUV EVs tested so far, the MG S5 came closest to its advertised range (- 6%), ahead of the BMW iX1(-10%), Kia EV3 (-11%) and Smart # 1 (-13%).

β›½ As Australians seek relief from rising fuel costs, new data reveals a clear gap between carmakers' fuel and driving range figures and what vehicles actually deliver on the road.

The results:
πŸ”Ή One hybrid used 27% more fuel in the real world than its label claimed
πŸ”Ή One EV's driving range came in 24% below its windscreen label, one EV came within 3%
πŸ”Ή 77% of the 154 petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles tested used more fuel than advertised

Thinking about going electric but worried about range anxiety? Knowing the Real-World figures can make all the difference.
