Dangerous goods are classified into 9 groups based on the type of hazard they pose:

Explosives (Class 1) - materials that are prone to combustion.

Gases (Class 2) - compressed, liquefied, dissolved or refrigerated gases that can asphyxiate or be flammable.

Flammable Liquids (Class 3) - liquids that are flammable.

Flammable Solids (Class 4) - solids that are flammable.

Oxidizing Substances (Class 5) - materials that can contribute to the combustion of other dangerous goods.

Toxic & Infectious Substances (Class 6) - materials that can cause serious injury or death if ingested, inhaled, or come into skin contact with.

Radioactive Material (Class 7) - materials that have radioactive properties.

Corrosives (Class 8) - materials that can chemically damage or destroy other materials, including human skin.

Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods (Class 9) - materials that pose a danger not covered by other classes, including environmentally hazardous substances and genetically modified organisms.
