Quick Thursday night check before you plug in: tyre pressures. 🛞

Soft tyres quietly eat your range. A few PSI low adds rolling resistance, wears the edges faster and makes the car feel lazy. EVs are heavy, so it shows up quicker than you'd think.

✅ Check them cold (before driving or after it's sat a while)
✅ Go by the placard on the driver's door pillar, not the number on the tyre wall
✅ Recheck monthly and before any road trip

TIP: instant torque needs respect. At smoko, the argument was simple: A fresh EV owner discovered that just giving it a little sq**rt can rearrange the shopping in one traffic-light cycle. The loudest bloke in the room had never owned an EV, naturally, but he had watched three Facebook videos and was now apparently the CSIRO. The useful bit is this: EV torque arrives quickly; be smooth in wet conditions and around passengers, tyres and anything unsecured in the cabin. EV ownership gets much easier once you stop treating the battery gauge like a medical emergency. A bit of planning beats panic, and actual data beats old mate's cousin's neighbour every time. The car does not need worshipping, just understanding. That leaves more time for driving it and less time for explaining electricity to people who still think kilowatts are a type of sausage.

Evening tip: plug in when you get home, and let the cheap power do the work overnight.

Most Aussie electricity plans are cheaper late at night and early morning. If your EV (or wall charger) can schedule charging, set it for off-peak so you wake up with a full battery without paying peak rates.

A few easy habits:
• Plug in every night as part of coming home, even if you only need a top-up
• Schedule charge start for your off-peak window (check your retailer or smart meter)
• Cap the daily limit around 80% for normal commuting; save 100% for road trips
• Precondition the cabin while still plugged in so comfort comes from the wall, not the pack

Set it once, forget it, and drive out every morning ready to go.

Midday tip: on the highway, your right foot matters more than you think.

Air resistance climbs fast as speed goes up, so an EV uses noticeably more energy at 110 km/h than at 100. Around town it barely matters, but on a long country run it can be the difference between cruising into the next charger with plenty spare and sweating the last 30 km.

A few easy habits:
• Ease back 5 to 10 km/h on long highway legs when the next charger is a stretch
• Keep an eye on the car's trip energy or range graph, it'll show you the difference in real time
• Headwinds, rain and roof racks all add drag, so allow a bit more buffer on those days
• Keep tyres at the right pressure, it all adds up

Same trip, a few extra minutes, a lot less range anxiety.

Heading off on a road trip? Here's a quick trick for faster Supercharger stops.

A cold battery can't take full charging speed, so if you just rock up and plug in, you might sit at a slower rate for the first 10 to 20 minutes. Set the DC fast charger as your destination in the car's nav and most EVs will warm the pack on the way, so it's ready to take a proper charge the moment you plug in.

A few easy habits:
• Put the Supercharger or DC fast charger in the in-car nav, not just your phone's maps app, so the car knows to precondition
• Set it at least 20 to 30 minutes out, especially on cool mornings or in winter
• If your car has a manual "precondition for charging" option, turn it on when you're close
• Arrive with a lower state of charge, around 10 to 20%, for the quickest top-up

Pick the charger as your destination and you'll get back on the road sooner.

MYTH: regen means brakes never need checking. The day's EV yarn started when A proud EV owner said the brake pedal was basically decorative and therefore the brakes could live forever. Five minutes later the conversation had produced one myth, two confident guesses and a bloke saying back in my day despite being forty-three. Reality was less dramatic: Regenerative braking reduces friction-brake use, but pads, rotors, fluid and calipers still need inspection and maintenance. Most EV mistakes are not exotic high-voltage disasters; they are ordinary human mistakes with a charging cable attached. Learn the basics, keep a sensible margin, and stop trying to win an argument with the dashboard. The electrons are not offended by your ego, but your trip plan might be.
