⚓The SS Yongala sank in a violent tropical cyclone on March 23, 1911, taking the lives of all 122 people on board in one of Australia's worst maritime disasters ⚓

Built in England in 1903, the 109-meter luxury passenger and freight steamship ran a regular coastal route between Australian ports. On March 23, 1911, under the command of Captain William Knight, the SS Yongala left Mackay bound for Townsville carrying 49 passengers, 72/73 crew, cargo, and a racehorse named Moonshine.

Shortly after departure, a telegram warned of a tropical cyclone. Because the ship's new wireless radio set had not yet arrived from England, the crew could not receive the alert sent via flags and telegraph.

The ship was last sighted entering the Whitsunday Passage before vanishing into the storm off Cape Bowling Green, south of Townsville. No human bodies were ever recovered, only some wreckage and the racehorse Moonshine.

The exact resting place of the vessel remained a mystery for 47 years. Local divers finally located the wreck in 1958, resting in about 30 meters of water roughly 48 nautical miles southeast of Townsville.

Protected under heritage laws, the SS Yongala is remarkably intact and serves as a world-renowned artificial reef and top-rated scuba diving destination teeming with marine life.

🌊 Four Aussie Reefs, Four Totally Different Worlds
Australia isn’t just home to one iconic reef, it’s home to wildly different underwater universes, each shaped by its own climate, currents, and marine cast of characters.

🐠 Great Barrier Reef : Tropical Giant of the North

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, stretching over 2,300 km. Warm, clear waters fuel:

🪸 Neon coral gardens

🐢Sea turtles, reef sharks, potato cod

🐟 Over 1,500 fish species

It’s vibrant, tropical, and bursting with biodiversity, the underwater equivalent of a rainforest.

🐚 South Australia Reefs : Cool‑Water Kelp Kingdom

The South Australia reefs flip the script with cooler, nutrient‑rich waters. Think:

🪸Towering kelp forests

💦Sponges, soft corals, and unique temperate species

🐉The legendary leafy sea dragon

It’s moody, dramatic, and full of creatures you won’t find on tropical reefs.

🐟 NSW Reefs : Rocky, Wild, and Full of Surprises

The NSW reef systems sit in the middle, literally and ecologically. These rocky reefs mix warm and cool currents, creating:

🪸Hardier corals and sponge gardens

🦈Grey nurse sharks cruising the drop-offs

A mash‑up of tropical visitors and temperate locals - It’s the ultimate hybrid zone.

🐬 Western Australia Reefs : Remote, Raw, and Ridiculously Rich

The Western Australia reefs are some of the most untouched in the world. From the famous Ningaloo Reef to the Rowley Shoals, WA delivers:

🐋Whale sharks cruising past coral walls

🪸Pristine hard‑coral gardens

🐢Manta rays, turtles, and pelagic visitors

It’s wild, remote, and feels like diving on a reef from 200 years ago.

So, which one is on your hit list?

Meet the Fluorescent Mushroom Coral, one of the most mesmerising sights you can stumble upon while diving the Great Barrier Reef.

This coral doesn’t just sit quietly on the ocean floor. It glows.
Under blue light or at night, its neon greens, electric oranges, and deep purples ignite like underwater fire, a natural bioluminescent show!

🪸 WHY DIVERS LOVE IT 🪸

🍄 Hypnotic colours that shift with light

🍄 Gentle, flowing movement that makes it look alive in a magical way

🍄 A favourite of macro photographers thanks to its intricate textures

🍄 Often found in shallow reef areas, making it accessible for all experience levels

What's your favourite coral to come across when diving in Australia?
