Our 2023 adventure has come to an end. We spent a couple of nights in Broken Hill after the Bash; visited Bells Milk Bar on the way out of town - then a steady meander to Mildura and down the Calder Highway. It was an amazing trip - 10,049km driven, camped 10 nights at pubs, 21 at Showgrounds, 36 at caravan parks and 19 nights at various free camping locations. No mechanicals, illness or injury - we feel very lucky to have seen some of the most remote and stunning parts of the country. Thanks for following us x

Another Mundi Mundi Bash done and dusted - highlights included media passes and access to the press pit for me and my photographer; a chopper ride with George; taking part in the world record breaking Nutbush and heaps of great music over three days including Icehouse and Human Nature. In Broken Hill for a couple of days working and washing - heading southbound for home after three months on the road.

Way, way out west … in the past week we have travelled to Longreach for the Stockmans Hall of Fame (fantastic) and the Qantas Museum (the Barbies in hostess uniforms was my favourite bit); Windorah; Eromanga (the furtherest town from the sea apparently and more dinosaurs); over the border into Tibooburra to watch the Tillies and tonight the Packsaddle Roadhouse where the wind is whipping up the red dust. Tomorrow Broken Hill for the Mundi Mundi Bash.

Wow. Windy Winton punches above its weight. Sunset happy hour at the CP park every night. Age of Dinosaurs Museum tour. Dinner at the gorgeous art deco North Gregory Hotel and free poetry reading/history lesson about Banjo Paterson writing Waltzing Matilda here. Friday night outdoor movies at the historic Royal Theatre. Movie was good (Indiana Jones) but the seats were killers.

After four nights at Innot Hot Springs, Queensland, Australia we head south to Undara Experience for some lava caves/tubes/craters and a terrific camp with great facilities including a massive restaurant/bar. Then into Townsville for an unscheduled visit to get some electrics fixed in the van. Ate a custard apple, lovely sculptures on the strand, visited Ray’s old family home, saw Air Force 3 (?) at the air base (flying visit by the Defense Secretary apparently) and watched Oppenheimer at a lovely little art deco movie house. Also stocked up as we won’t be in another big town for a while. Heading west then south into dinosaur country.

We spent a lovely few days in Atherton exploring the tablelands and enjoying the greenery of the rainforest - riding the rail trail; stocking up on amazing produce from the farm gates at $2 per bag of bananas, passionfruit, mandarins and avos; visits to curtain fig tree and Millaa Millaa Falls. A few nights now at Innot Springs where there is great little collection of artesian pools and spas ranging from cold to hot - really hot - about 45 degrees - I lasted about four minutes before getting in the plunge pool.

Back on the bitumen and civilisation after three solid days on the road. More than 1400km of gravel roads. It was tough and at times challenging but we made it and didn’t break anything. What an iconic Aussie experience - was it worth it? Yes. Would we do it again? No. Perhaps. But differently.

✔️ off the bucket list - after six weeks and 4788km we reached the northern most point of the Australian continent at Cape York. It’s about 40km drive from the campground. Stopped at the Croc Tent which sells souvenirs (code for s**t and glitter), drove through some stunning rainforest, did a creek crossing, reached the carpark then walked over a rocky hill for about 700m to get to the tip. Stunning views, windy as but worth it. We feel a sense of achievement and some relief. Tonight we will have fish and chips on the beach and drink a toast to us🍾

We have arrived at Bamaga the northern most town in Australia- the relief was palpable such a long way and huge effort to get here. We took our time on the gravel roads up after hearing horror stories and seeing first hand the damage the corrugations can do to vehicles and vans. From Coen we spent two nights at Moreton Telegraph Station so I could work, then one night at Fruit Bat Falls - the only croc-free swimming hole on the Peninsula. The next day was 100km over the Jardine River in the ferry and into Loyalty Beach campground. Such a beautiful beach but no swimming 🐊
The tip is just 30km up the road and we will head up on Saturday and get the obligatory picture. It’s no tropical resort up here by any means but we are enjoying the serenity.

Unseasonal rain in FNQ and my work commitments saw us prop in Mareeba for six days to let the weather clear. We had lovely day trips to Kuranda for a ride on the Skyrail and a wander through the hippy markets (reminded me of my youth) and Cairns/Port Douglas. Bumped out Friday and washed the car and van in prep for a photoshoot. A review on the Warrior will appear in the August edition of Caravan World We hit the Peninsula Development Road which is sealed to Laura where we camped for the night. More driving pics this morning before finally hitting the gravel - 250km of red dirt corrugations. And we are still 450km from the tip! Parked tonight behind the Coen Pub and looking forward to happy hour.

A quick three-night stop in Townsville which included a ferry ride to Magnetic Island with the bikes and a swim at Alma Bay. The old boy went out on his fishing charter and bagged a Queen fish which we promptly ate for dinner. 50km up the road we camped at Mystic Sands Golf Resort at Balgal Beach where we enjoyed an evening game of barefoot bowls with other travellers. Then into the Atherton Tablelands to Paronella Park - the ruins of a home/resort built in the rainforest by a Spaniard in the 1930s - quite fascinating. The rain from the west has reached us so a visit to the Mamu Tropical Skywalk in the rainforest meant no views but lots of rain. Stunning country although I don’t think I could handle 4 metres of rain per year!

We are a bit further north and it’s getting warmer - bumped out of Yeppoon on Monday and spent three nights on the road including a stop at the Kuttabul Pub just north of Mackay. A lovely couple pulled up next to us in their Crusader - turns out they are from Warrnambool and after a bit of a yarn it turns out that Sally taught Carlie and Erin in primary school! Friday and Saturday night were in beautiful Airlie Beach - hard to get sites because of school hols. We had a fab boat trip out to the Whitsundays to snorkel and swim on the iconic Whitehaven Beach - just beautiful! We stopped at the giant mango at Bowen and are spending the night at the Home Hill Showground watching the smoke from the sugar cane fires in the sunset. Tomorrow Townsville.
