The sheep export ban is no longer a political debate - it’s a lived reality in WA.
Shrinking flocks, shearing crews folding, transport demand collapsing, and international partners questioning our reliability.

One truth came out of LIVEXchange recently: even industries doing good work can lose everything if they lose the narrative.

For the cattle sector, and for all rural supply chains, this is a moment to double down on welfare, transparency, and communication. The cattle export industry shows what earned social licence looks like - strong welfare systems, professional handling, traceability, and deep partnerships with Indonesia and the region.

And at the centre of every supply chain is transport.

Rural carriers are the real-time observers of welfare, biosecurity, contamination risks, and food security pressures. Yet operators affected most by the sheep ban are also the least able to access transition funding - tied up in co-contributions and paperwork at the busiest time of year.

ALRTA will continue pushing for fairness, practical support, and policies that recognise the essential role rural transport plays in Australia’s food and fibre economy.

The sheep industry’s experience is a warning. The cattle industry’s trajectory is an opportunity. And our supply chains depend on strong, trusted, capable people.
