✨ Aurora Borealis ✨

Seeing the Northern Lights was one of those true “wow” travel moments for me, and this trip exceeded anything I could have imagined.

Three nights of chasing them, with two visible to the naked eye, dancing across the sky above us - absolute magic 🤍

Alaska – Day 7

📍 Fairbanks

Last night, after seeing the northern lights one last time, my Colette tour came to an end (more on that soon). With my flight not until tomorrow, I decided to try another 'Alaskan' activity... ice fishing on the Chena Lake.

No luck catching fish 😅 but it was still fun. We were in a cosy little cabin on the ice with a stove for cooking the fish - one lucky person caught enough for us all. Peaceful and exactly what I needed after three late nights chasing the Aurora.

Possibly my final wildlife sighting - a bald eagle, moving from a tree to right beside our cabin, just casually chilling in the snow 🤍

Alaska – Day 6

📍 Fairbanks

We stepped back in time this morning at the Antique Auto Museum - vintage cars, old-school fashion, and music from the era all perfectly restored.

Next, we popped into North Pole and visited the Santa Claus House, packed with ornaments, gifts, and all things Christmas!

Then straight into full Alaska mode… dog sledding with a team of the loudest, most excited Alaskan huskies 😅 Gliding through the snow with them was something special.

The afternoon ended at the musher’s home for dinner, sliding down their sled run, and hearing stories of the late Susan Butcher a four-time Iditarod winner and true legend from her daughter and husband David, who run Trail Breaker Kennel. I even got decked out in full musher winter gear to experience what mushing in extreme conditions is really like!

Before our final stop at Aurora Point tonight (🤞), we had a quick visit to the ice sculpture festival 🤍

Alaska - Day 5

📍 Arctic Circle

Today was one of those “pinch me” travel moments… flying from Fairbanks over the Arctic Circle to Coldfoot in an 8-seater ‘Arctic’ plane.

Perfect weather gave us unreal views of the Brooks Range, the frozen Yukon River and endless snowy mountains 🤍

Coldfoot is home to roughly 30 people, with a one-stop shop for fuel, food, gifts and drinks.. the northernmost saloon in the U.S - The Frozen Foot!

Our local guide took us on a driving tour before heading onto part of the iconic Dalton Highway. Fun fact: only about 3% of visitors to Alaska ever do this!

Earlier this morning, we visited Starbucks in Fairbanks and grabbed some Girl Scout cookies (classic American morning), then went to the University of Alaska Museum of the North and watched Dynamic Aurora, learning all about the northern lights… just in time to hopefully see them again tonight ✨

Alaska – Day 4

📍 Alaska Railroad

Today we had a very welcome slow start after our late-night Aurora viewing, before travelling on the Alaska Railroad from Talkeetna to Fairbanks.

“Flag stops” are actually a thing literally like hailing a taxi, with people hopping on and off along the snow-covered tracks because there are no roads!

The 8-hour journey was filled with snow-covered mountains, endless white valleys, and buildings, staircases even buses completely buried in snow 🤯

We spotted wildlife from the carriage, enjoyed dinner onboard, and rolled into Fairbanks before checking into the wonderfully quirky Pike Waterfront Lodge… now on the hunt for more Northern Lights tonight ✨

Last night was one of the best… seeing the Northern Lights for the first time. Pure magic ✨😍

Alaska – Day 3

📍 Palmer & Talkeetna

Today we left Anchorage and headed to the town of Palmer, where we visited the Musk Ox Farm - a sustainable domestication project working to preserve these incredible woolly creatures and raise awareness of their unique fibre.

On the drive, we were lucky enough to catch views of Denali, plus a lunch stop with all the fast food options - including Raising Cane’s (apparently a big deal… I was influenced, and yes it was good 😆).

We then visited the Iditarod Headquarters, learning all about this fascinating and incredibly tough sled dog race.

From there, it was on to Talkeetna for a wander through town, more Denali views, a pub stop (of course 🍻), and our home for the night: the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge 🤍

Alaska - Day 2

📍 Whittier

Our Collette tour officially kicked off today with a quick look around Anchorage before heading to Whittier for the most incredible glacier cruise in Prince William Sound.

The weather was on our side and we saw not only the Beloit and Blackstone glaciers, but also otters, Steller sea lions and a bald eagle 🤍 The cruise ended with an unforgettable beach landing, walking among icebergs!

We finished the day driving through Moose Flats and spotted our very first moose - too quick for a photo, but hopefully more to come 🤞🫎

Alaska - Day 1

📍Anchorage

An overnight flight and early arrival into Anchorage meant the search for coffee was on! Thanks to The Biscuit Club and Snow City for delivering the goods ☕️ Cue the photo of a very tired me with the biggest “small” coffee ever 😅

We spent the day cruising around town.. visiting a local museum, a lookout, and the Ulu Factory before sampling some local beers, mac and cheese, and finishing it all off with a beautiful sunset 🧡

And that’s a wrap on the adventure of a lifetime!

Our Aurora Expeditions journey ended with one final zodiac ride and a wet landing at King George Island, where we caught a short flight with Antarctic Airways back to Punta Arenas, Chile for an overnight stay before the journey home.

There’s something about this part of the world that has to be seen to be believed. The untouched beauty, incredible wildlife, the raw landscapes, and the deep history make Antarctica a place like no other. Feeling truly honored to have witnessed it firsthand.

If Antarctica isn’t already on your bucket list, it absolutely should be - for so many magical reasons ✨
