Working in my garden and found birdwing butterfly caterpillar (family Papilionidae) resting on and eating the host plant I have growing. Such a delight to have them in my backyard. Jade vine also is blooming everywhere. Another reason I love living in Cairns.

Congratulations Kuranda Scenic Rail 135 years - 26th June Opened in 1891, the railway was originally built to connect Cairns with inland goldfields following severe wet seasons that made supply routes unreliable. Constructed between 1886 and 1891, it remains one of Queensland’s most ambitious engineering achievements, with up to 1,500 workers overcoming challenging terrain to build the line.

🐠 Planning a Great Barrier Reef trip from Cairns? Here's what you need to know.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's most extraordinary natural wonders — and Cairns is your gateway to experiencing it. With so many tour options available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming.
Here are Maryanne's top tips after 30+ years living in Cairns and helping visitors discover the Reef:
✔️ Choose your experience first — snorkelling, diving, scenic flight or glass-bottom boat? Each gives you something different
✔️ Book ahead — reef tours fill quickly, especially during dry season (May–October)
✔️ Go early — morning departures mean calmer seas and better visibility
✔️ Outer Reef vs Inner Reef — the Outer Reef offers more pristine coral and marine life; inner reef options like Green Island and Fitzroy Island are perfect if you want a reef AND island experience in one day
