Birthright! Male Anglerfish got the short straw or did they?! 🐟 You decide…

Male anglerfish (suborder Ceratioidei) are tiny compared to females. While females have a luminous lure to attract prey, males use their impeccable sense of smell to find a mate in the deep sea's darkness.

💙 Once he locates his love, he uses his small, sharp teeth to latch onto his intended's side, holding on for the rest of his (and her) life. In some species the male becomes a permanent parasite on the female, his small body left simply trailing along in the water beside hers. Slowly he fuses to her, becoming an irremovable appendage. As he no longer needs his eyes, he loses the ability to use them and relies on his host for all of his nutrition. Even his bloodstream eventually connects with hers. (I can hear all your thoughts…!!)

However, he does have one use! He provides her with a constant supply of s***m. This ensures that the female can produce fertile eggs for the rest of her life, making him vital to the species' survival. 🐟💡💕

This little see-through shrimp was only about 1 cm long — barely visible except for a few tiny dots that gave it away!

Creatures like this are hard to find but so rewarding when you do. It’s always worth pausing to investigate soft corals and anemones — you never know who’s hiding there.

I think this is a Periclimenes species, but if anyone can help with a more specific ID, I’d be very grateful! 🦐💙

This Plastic Free July, let’s make a difference for our oceans and communities. Did you know that an estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic (including ) accumulates in the global ocean each year? is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution, for cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. 🌱✨

Plastic Pollution in Numbers:

😞8 million pieces of plastic pollution enter the ocean every day. (OSPAR, 2009)
😞12 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year. (Eunomia, 2016)
😞80% of all studied marine debris is plastic. (IUCN, 2020)
😞5.25 trillion macro and microplastics may now be floating in the open ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tonnes. (Eriksen, 2014)
😞100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution every year. (UK Government, 2018)
