NTRO was pleased to be involved with the Australian Local Government Association's important 2026 National Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Congress in Cairns this week.

The ALGA Roads Congress is the premier national gathering of local government specialists, experts and leaders responsible for the management of Council roads - which is around 75% of Australia's road network.

NTRO Chief Operating Officer Dr Richard Yeo presented in the session Fuel Security and Supply Chain Resilience, while Richard and NTRO's Director, Industry Partnerships and Technology, Anna D'Angelo met with Federal Shadow Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Susan McDonald.

NTRO was delighted to join the Irish Australian Chamber of Commerce Business Leaders Lunch in Brisbane, featuring special guest Sally Stannard (Director General Queensland Department Transport & Main Roads).

Sally shared thoughtful reflections on her formative years, her education, leadership, the challenges and opportunities facing Queensland’s transport sector, and the importance of providing a reliable, accessible transport system for all.

It was an engaging and wide-ranging conversation, with plenty of insights on leadership, decision-making and the responsibility that comes with shaping transport systems that connect communities and support economic growth - as we lead up to 2032.

For NTRO, these conversations matter.

They give us the opportunity to listen, learn and strengthen partnerships across government and industry - that are critical to delivering better transport outcomes.

Another great Engineering, Innovation & Technology Forum from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

NTRO was pleased to be part of this year’s three-day program, with our experts delivering technical presentations and joining TMR colleagues at the NACOE booth to discuss current research and projects across pavement, asset management, sustainability, road safety, structures and network operations.

Our latest Network Survey Vehicle (NSV) was also on display, giving attendees a closer look at the technology helping us better understand the condition and performance of our road networks.

NTRO are on the ground in Vanuatu, working with our partners TRL, and the Vanuatu Public Works Department team.

Our ‘NTRO-Pacific’ team is supporting TRL with the implementation of an asset management system for Vanuatu through collecting condition data of the core road network (around 750km) across 5 islands.

As part of this project NTRO developed visual inspection manuals (sealed, unsealed roads and structures) for implementation across the country. These manuals are specific to Vanuatu and the conditions faced by the PWD engineers and road users.

A full room and plenty of conversation at NTRO Edge: Transport: The Community Connector in Brisbane yesterday.

From the future demands of Brisbane to the very different role transport plays across regional and remote Queensland, the conversation kept coming back to one thing: transport is ultimately about people and access.

The upcoming challenges of the 2032 Olympic Games were described as a “two-week sneak peek of the future”, with some public transport routes potentially carrying many times their normal passenger numbers all while freight and the wider network still needs to keep moving.

We also heard about the importance of transport as a connection to family, healthcare, education and opportunity in regional communities, including one story from recent flooding where a high-rail vehicle carried more than 3,500 people, first responders, essential goods and even one very precious little kangaroo across an isolated community.

A big thank you to our speakers Sally Stannard, Kat Stapleton, Sal Petroccitto OAM and Caitlin McMorrow for sharing their insights, and to everyone in the room who asked questions, shared perspectives and contributed to a genuinely engaging conversation.

Much excitement at NTRO as we welcomed five-time AFL/VFL premiership player and AFL Hall of Famer Dermott Brereton to our Melbourne head office this week.

Dermott was guest speaker at NTRO’s Transport Data Services’ annual staff gathering, which brought together colleagues from our infrastructure measurement, field services and data solutions teams right across Australia and NZ. Staff from other departments at NTRO were also invited to attend Dermott’s session.

In a lively and entertaining interview with NTRO Executive Director Jeff Doyle, Dermott shared insights and experiences from his 211-game AFL/VFL career with Hawthorn, Collingwood and Sydney, and his current career as an AFL media analyst, before taking questions from the team.

NTRO is proud to announce that we have been shortlisted for the IRF 2026 Awards.

Our nomination in the Climate Resilience and Adaptation Award recognises our work on 'Using NTRO's iPAVE to Identify Flood-Damaged Pavements', showing how better pavement data can help road agencies identify hidden flood damage and build more resilient networks.

We look forward to joining industry leaders at the IRF 2026 Annual Conference in Geneva, where the winners will be announced during the IRF Awards Ceremony on 18 November 2026.

NTRO was proud to have its team at the recent Australian Small Bridges Conference and Exhibition in Adelaide.

Our experts in bridges and structures Tatiana Sanchez Castano, Colum McGovern and Regina Sampaio presented, chaired, appeared on panels and attended the event – offering practical knowledge to bridge, road and rail engineers, asset owners, managers, contractors and suppliers about significant new developments and requirements for small to medium span bridges, including culverts and related structures.

Tatiana was on the Women In Bridges panel, while Colum and Tatiana co-presented a session on recommendations for the design, construction and management of highly skewed bridges.

NTRO offers expertise in this area to all levels of government, and state and territory transport agencies, and we urge those interested in finding out how to maintain and manage bridges and structures to reach out directly to our team at [email protected] .

Railway crossings are part of everyday journeys, but they remain places where safety can't be taken for granted.

Australia has more than 20,000 railway crossings, with 5 fatalities, 17 injuries and 893 near hits reported at these locations in 2025.
