Travelling with kids is exciting but for many families, motion sickness can turn a holiday highlight into a headache. Motion sickness happens when the brain gets mixed signals from the inner ear, eyes and body during movement and it’s most common in children aged about 2–12 years.

Here’s how you can reduce the chance of travel sickness and make the journey more comfortable:

✨ Simple non-medicine strategies that work:
✔️ Encourage your child to look at the horizon or out the window rather than screens or books as this helps the brain make sense of motion.
✔️ Avoid unnecessary head movements by using neck pillows or a headrest.
✔️ On planes, sitting over the wings often feels more stable.
✔️ Offer a light snack before travel and avoid heavy, greasy meals just beforehand.
✔️ Keep the air fresh with ventilation or air-conditioning as stuffy air can make nausea worse.

💊 Medicines for motion sickness

It’s not about the star rating, it’s about how food + water are handled behind the scenes.

Here are common reasons it can happen:

✅ You don’t know the hygiene practices of the person preparing your food. Even one lapse in hand hygiene can contaminate food or surfaces.

✅ Food can sit too long at unsafe temperatures (hello, buffet life). Warm food left out is a perfect environment for germs to multiply.

✅ Cross-contamination can happen in any kitchen. Raw foods (especially meat/seafood) can contaminate ready-to-eat foods via boards, utensils, benches or hands.

✅ Ice, water, salads, or “fresh” garnishes may be the weak link. Ice can be made from unsafe water, and raw produce may be washed with local water.

✅ Hotel standards may not match your expectations. A hotel can look spotless out front, but food safety is about consistent “back-of-house” practices: cleaning, cooking, storage, and safe water/raw ingredients.

✅ Where the produce comes from matters. Even good kitchens can’t fully control contamination that starts earlier in the supply chain (water sources, handling during transport, etc.).

Taking ADHD medication overseas, especially stimulants like Vyvanse, dexamphetamine or methylphenidate can be challenging . Every country has different rules and some treat these medicines as controlled or prohibited substances.

✅ 1. Know exactly what you’re taking

Have a clear list of your medications, strengths and total quantities. Some countries limit the amount of controlled medicine you can carry.

✅ 2. Research your destination’s rules

Check the embassy or consulate website for each country you’re visiting and transiting through. Requirements vary widely from simple documentation to import permits or bans.

✅ 3. Contact the embassy.

Email gives you a written record in case you ever need to show customs that you followed all instructions.

✅ 4. Recheck requirements before travelling

Regulations can change, so confirm the rules again close to your departure date.

✅ 5. Carry the right documents

Keep several copies (printed and digital) of:
• Your doctor’s letter (diagnosis, medication details, dosing)
