Welcome Back K160! - Geelong Members Train

Join Steamrail Victoria and the Victorian Goldfields Railway in celebrating the restoration of steam locomotive K160! The Steamrail Board invites Steamrail and VGR members to travel behind K160 from Southern Cross Station to Geelong and return.

Geelong has always been a part of K160's story, being the first depot the locomotive was allocated to when it entered VR service on the 22nd of December, 1940. The locomotive was withdrawn in late 1977, and in 1979 was sold to the Castlemaine & Maldon Railway Preservation Society (CMRPS).

After restoration was completed in 1986, K160 served the CMRPS (now the Victorian Goldfields Railway) until 2012, and it was moved by truck to Newport in 2014 for an extensive overhaul. After many years of work by a dedicated team of volunteers and with the assistance of Steamrail, K160 had its first fire lit on the 5th of February 2026 for initial steam testing. The locomotive moved for the first time post-overhaul on the 28th of February, and triumphantly ventured onto the mainline under its own steam for the first time in preservation on April 28th 2026.

The tour will operate from Southern Cross Station to Geelong and return. It will provide a unique opportunity to experience K160 stretching its legs out on the mainline after 58 years. Not to be missed!

Tickets are only available to Members of Steamrail Victoria or the Victorian Goldfields Railway (Castlemaine & Maldon Railway Preservation Society). This event is not open to the general public.

Another big day for K160! With a new headboard too 😍

Today saw steam locomotive K160 from the Victorian Goldfields Railway haul its first mainline passenger train since VR service, operating on the Werribee Shuttles with K153 as a part of its ongoing overhaul.

Though a very historic milestone, there is still more to come with K160, and we have a big announcement for it coming very soon! 😉

🚂🔥 K160 RETURNS TO THE MAIN LINE THIS SUNDAY! 🔥🚂

A historic moment is almost here!

After years of dedication, hard work and countless volunteer hours from both VGR and Steamrail, K160 will take another major step in its journey back to full service when it hauls this Sunday's Werribee Shuttles!

This is a rare opportunity to experience K160 on the main line for the first time in 58 years as she continues her running-in program before returning home to the Victorian Goldfields Railway. 🚂✨

Step aboard heritage wooden "Red Rattler" carriages dating back to 1908 and enjoy a nostalgic steam-hauled journey between Werribee and Laverton. Hear K160's whistle echo across Melbourne's west, watch steam billow skyward, and experience living railway history in action.
