well deserved recognition!!

The Man Who Saved a Life Just Called It a Tuesday.

December 2020. Near Birdsville. 48 degrees.

Michael Thompson was on a fuel run in his triple road train when he spotted an abandoned four-wheel drive on a dirt track.

A note on the steering wheel. A 75-year-old Sydney grandfather named Terrence Stewart had broken down and decided to walk 30 kilometres to the nearest station.

In 48 degree heat.

Thompson followed the man's footprints for 13 kilometres in his truck. Then got out and followed them on foot into the scrub.

He found Stewart collapsed on the ground. Not moving. Thompson thought he was looking at a dead man.

He started first aid anyway.

The Flying Doctor eventually got Stewart out. Months in intensive care followed. But he made it home to his wife, his kids, his grandkids.

All because a truckie changed his route that day for no particular reason. Came out a day early for no particular reason. And stopped when he didn't have to.

When asked if he was a hero Thompson said this.

"It's what you do when you are out in the bush."
