Fremantle Traffic Bridge Closure

The Fremantle Traffic Bridge will be closed for 12 months
from the 1st of February 2026 for critical construction of a new replacement bridge.

This will add an additional 38% traffic load (23,000 daily vehicle movements) onto the Stirling Bridge which currently carries a large proportion of container volumes to and from the Fremantle Port Precinct.

There are expected delays accessing the wharf precinct during peak times (0700-0900 and 1500-1700).

SYDNEY CARGO EXAMINATION FACILITY (CEF) DELAYS

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) have received further advice from the Australian Border Force (ABF) of ongoing processing delays currently affecting container examinations in New South Wales.

These delays are the result of a significant increase in container volumes received at the NSW Container Examination Facility (CEF), which has led to extended lodge times across certain consignments. The ABF acknowledge the operational impacts this may have on members' businesses and supply chain scheduling.

In recent weeks, the CEF has experienced a substantial uplift in complex examinations because of increased operational tempo consistent with Australian Government and community expectations. This has contributed to short‑term delays in container throughput. It is important to note that Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) deliveries remain largely unaffected.

The ABF has redeployed resources to manage the current backlog and remain committed to restoring normal processing timeframes. The ABF has also noted an increase in correspondence to the Global Feedback Unit and Cargo Support Contact Centre relating to delays and wish to reassure industry that these concerns are being actively monitored and incorporated into their operational planning.

International cooperation uncovers major v**e smugling operation.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers posted overseas in Beijing have prevented over 600,000 illegal v**es from hitting our streets after information sharing led to the referral of almost 70 high risk containers.

The majority of the seized v**es - which had a street value of approximately AUD $30M, arrived into NSW between September and October 2025, and was the direct result of effective collaboration and cooperation between and ABF officers based overseas and their international counterparts.

The information allowed ABF officers to identify several other shipments related to the initial referrals, with majority of the containers falsely described as items such as glass bottles, lamps, toy cars, balls, curtains and books in an attempt to evade border detection.

The efforts of the ABF’s international network have been critical in enabling engagement with international l authorities, fostering trusted relationships, and providing timely exchanges of information in support of offshore disruption and detections at the border.

Between 1st January and 31st October 2025, the ABF has received over 1,000 referrals from offshore counterparts, stopping over 524 million cigarette sticks, over 1 million v**es and over 918 tonnes of loose-leaf to***co from entering Australia.

Acting Commander of Targeting, Laura Uttley said a key element of the ABF’s strategy for combatting illicit to***co and v**es and other prohibited goods is to disrupt the flow into Australia as far upstream from the border as possible.
