Thoughts of a Freight Forwarder: A Journey with Global Products
Each day, I come across a product, enjoy it, or just take a closer look. Maybe it’s the freight forwarder in me, maybe it's curiosity, but I always find myself asking: what am I buying and where is it from?
Being a freight forwarder lets you see that not everything we have can be consumed or enjoyed right here in our own country. Yet, I always manage to find something of good quality that's good for my body and mind.
A big part of my job is understanding that while some of the best things from our country go overseas, we need to import because we don’t produce enough ourselves. Sometimes, I wish it wasn’t this way because I believe in supporting my country and its products. As I sit here enjoying a mango, I see it’s not from Australia; it’s packaged in New Zealand, but it originally comes from Ghana, Mexico, and Peru. It's a common sight at one of our biggest supermarkets, seeing products in the aisle that come from anywhere but here.
Seeing Australian products on shelves overseas makes me proud, but it also makes me wonder: why is it easier to send our products abroad and still make a profit? Why don’t we keep more for ourselves? Sure, it's business, and economics play a big role. But when you step back as a consumer, you have to wonder: why do we buy what we buy?
It's a question we all need to think about, especially as economies around the world get tighter, making some richer and others poorer. What we'll all do, why we'll all buy the things we do, and how we'll choose between local or international products are questions with different answers for everyone.
But more than anything, I enjoy my work. I love being part of the business that makes international trade possible, helping people bring their projects to life. It’s fulfilling, apart from how much I love my family, which will always come first.
Navigating the world of politics, economics, and trade is complex, like life itself—filled with ups and downs, new jobs, challenges, and lessons. But I’m grateful for each part of it. I’m also grateful for the friends and family I connect with around the world through my work. It’s a pleasure to help move beautiful products into and out of my country.
Life is full of questions and experiences, and living through them is how we find answers. So here I am, enjoying what I do and appreciating the amazing things happening in the world. My thoughts for the day!
