We started that morning with starter pistols.

Not quite the gentle botanical garden experience

I had imagined.

Our private guide explained it straight away.

The pistols are fired to frighten the monkeys

away from the fruit trees. Loud, sharp, and

completely at odds with the tranquility of 147

acres of some of the most beautiful gardens

I have ever walked through.

And then, not five minutes later, I spotted him.

A small toque macaque sitting completely still

beside a tree root, a dry leaf resting perfectly

on top of his head like a tiny hat. Unbothered.

Absolutely unbothered.

That was Kandy.

We were fortunate enough to have KA Sunil

Gunathilake as our guide throughout this tour,

a man whose personal friendships include Dame

Jane Goodall and Sir David Attenborough. Walking

these gardens with someone who carries that kind

of knowledge and passion for the natural world

is a privilege that simply cannot be replicated

by any self-guided audio tour.

He showed us the orchid house. Over 300 species

in every shape, size and colour you can imagine,

with grandfather beard moss draped from the

entire ceiling like something from a story book.

He pointed out the Avenue of Royal Palms, the

giant Javanese fig tree that has been growing

for 150 years, and the suspension bridge that

appeared in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

We visited the spot where a young Queen Elizabeth

once planted a tree during her own visit to these

gardens. We stood in the same space.

And then the sky turned.

Blue to grey to almost black in about ten minutes

as a proper Sri Lankan thunderstorm rolled across

the manicured lawns. Our driver Aman appeared

without being asked, umbrellas in hand, perfectly

calm, and walked us back to the vehicle without

a single person getting properly wet.

That is the kind of travel experience I plan

for my clients.

Not just the famous sites. Not just the five star

rooms. But the moments in between that nobody

puts on a brochure. The monkey with the leaf hat.

The orchid house that smells like nothing else

on earth. The guide who knows Dame Jane Goodall

by her first name. The driver who anticipates

the storm before you do.

🌺 Some places don't just impress you. They leave you speechless.

I want to recall the experience at the incredible Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is often called the Eighth Wonder of the World. Standing before this magnificent rock fortress, rising 183 metres above the surrounding landscape, I could only imagine the vision and craftsmanship that brought it to life more than 1,500 years ago.

Our journey began through beautifully landscaped gardens, peaceful water features that still function today, and a fascinating museum where the famous Sigiriya frescoes have been carefully recreated. Every corner revealed another story from Sri Lanka's remarkable past.

Walking through the ancient grounds, seeing the impressive Lion's Paws, and learning about the ingenious hydraulic systems that still power the fountains was a reminder that true innovation has existed for centuries.

I was lucky to enjoy a more personal tour with our guide, Sunil, whose knowledge brought the history of Sigiriya to life in the most engaging way. Experiences like this are what make travel so meaningful.

And yes, my Apple Watch made it to the top too, recording every step of an unforgettable climb. ⌚🌿

Sri Lanka continues to surprise me with its beauty, history, and culture. Every day here reveals another reason to fall in love with this extraordinary country.

🦈 A Morning in the Maldives I'll Never Forget 💙

Some travel moments stay with you long after you've unpacked your suitcase—and this was one of them.

I set off on a private excursion with Pearlshine Tours, where it truly felt like I had a little piece of the Maldives all to myself. Our first stop was a breathtaking white sandbank surrounded by endless shades of turquoise. With nothing but the sound of gentle waves and open ocean in every direction, it was one of the most peaceful places I've ever experienced.

The adventure continued as I slipped into the warm Indian Ocean to swim alongside graceful nurse sharks, elegant stingrays, colourful tropical fish, and even a fascinating horned barracuda. With no crowds and no rush, I had the freedom to float, explore, and simply soak in every incredible moment.

Experiences like this remind me that luxury travel isn't just about beautiful destinations—it's about creating memories that you'll treasure forever.

Honestly I did not expect this trip to hit

the way it did.

I have travelled a lot. I know how to manage

an itinerary and I know what good travel looks

like from the outside.

But Sri Lanka and the Maldives reminded me

what it feels like from the inside.

And that is a completely different thing.

There was a morning in the Sri Lankan hill

country where I sat with a cup of tea looking

out over an estate that seemed to go on forever.

I just stayed there.

No agenda. No next thing to get to.

Just that view and that quiet.

And then a few days later I was standing on

a sandbank in the Maldives with warm water

around my feet and a horizon so wide and clean

it almost felt like a reset button for your

whole nervous system.

I travel professionally. I know these places well.

But even I needed this reminder of what

it is actually all for.

We spend so much energy on the logistics of

travel. The transfers. The timings. The lists.

And somewhere in all of that we forget

to just arrive.

This trip I actually arrived.

Properly. Fully.

And it made all the difference.

A local island stay in the Maldives offers a completely different perspective to the luxury resorts most travellers know. From the moment the speedboat arrived at the bustling harbour, it was clear this experience would be about discovering everyday island life alongside the incredible beauty of the Indian Ocean.

A warm welcome from the team at Avyanna Guhli Beach Hotel, a comfortable stay, and sunrise views across crystal-clear waters made every morning unforgettable. Exploring the island by buggy gave me a deeper appreciation of this remarkable community—an island built to support the growing population of Malé, with its own schools, medical centre, sports facilities, local businesses and welcoming residents.

Watching fish gather around the marina, strolling the quiet streets, and slowing down to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere reminded me that the Maldives is about much more than overwater villas. It's a destination filled with culture, community and genuine hospitality.
