Tassie does this time of year well, doesn’t she?
We love the light and the autumn colours in this pic of 2052.
It’s also a good time to give you an update on TasRail's Locomotive Life Extension Project (LLEP).
2052 is one of three 2050 class locomotives now completed under the program, with five legacy locomotives still to go. The next locomotive (2006) is on track to come out of the workshop later this year.
What makes this project something we’re particularly proud of?
From skilled trades in our workshops to a wide network of local suppliers supporting everything from small components to complex fabrication, this is a genuinely Tasmanian effort. Along the way, we’ve also been able to grow our workforce and build capability - with our teams gaining valuable experience in completely stripping, rebuilding and re-qualifying locomotive components for the future.
And, in a time where cost of living pressures are front of mind, there’s something powerful about extending the life of existing assets. Rebuilding locomotives is not just practical - it’s sustainable, helping us get more out of what we already have while keeping freight moving efficiently across the state, with the added benefit of buying our business time to properly assess other technologies.
You’ll already see these locomotives hard at work delivering improved reliability and availability for our customers.
A great example of Tasmanian know-how, keeping Tasmania moving.
