The sound of steam, steel, and a locomotive coming to life.

Before every journey through the valley, the crew begin the careful process of warming up the train — building pressure, checking systems, and preparing for another day on the rails. One of the most iconic sounds at Zig Zag Railway.

Save this for your next day trip idea! The is so much fun for the whole family!

A definite must for train enthusiasts, it was so amazing to see the locomotive do a run around - where it detaches then re-couples on the other end so the train can change directions without turning around. If you do the longer trip, you can see this process a few times! 🚂

I loved seeing the gorgeous sandstone viaducts and it was a lovely outing. Rug up if you’re going in the next few months - you’ll want to open the windows to enjoy the views and it can be breezy!

Water stored in the tender is injected into the locomotive’s boiler, where the intense heat from the firebox boils it into high-pressure steam. That steam is then used to drive the engine’s pistons, powering the train through the spectacular Blue Mountains landscape.
