Our crews are back on the wire, sharpening the skills and teamwork required for complex winch operations ahead of the coming fire season 🚁

From winch operations to specialist rappel insertion, our focus remains the same: highly trained crews, proven aircraft, and the capability to safely deliver people where they're needed most.

This September marks 10 years since Kestrel Aviation embarked on its world leading night firebombing program.

In cooperation with the government of Victoria and commercial partners, Kestrel successfully developed Australia’s first medium helicopter night firebombing capability with regulatory first approvals for the use of remote water sources and first attack. With proof of concept evaluated over subsequent contract seasons, our program transitioned to super medium helicopters, providing a mature and optimised IFR night vision fire suppression capability.

With over 2,000 water loads retrieved and delivered, incident free and across remote mountainous areas to the urban interface, the program represents a model example of mature risk management and industry cooperation – balancing pioneering innovation in an unknown and hostile setting with the focused use of proportional and pragmatic risk mitigation. Kestrel’s night firebombing program was recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving the award for Night Vision International Advancement at APSCON 2019 and the award for innovation at the Airspace and Aviation Australia Awards 2020.

As we finalise preparations for the impending Australian fire season, Kestrel remains focused on its ongoing commitment to fire agencies, advancement of its industry leading capabilities and its dedication to the safety of communities across Australia.

With early season fire activity in Victoria last weekend, Kestrel Aviation was once again ready in numbers to support the requests of fire agencies and communities under threat. Kestrel operates nine Bell 412 and five Bell 212 medium lift helicopters, locally positioned to meet domestic demands 365 days a year.

Every minute counts during a bushfire.

Improved access to remote water sources means shorter turnaround times, more water delivered to the fireground, and better outcomes for communities and the environment. Great to see continued investment in critical aerial firefighting infrastructure across Victoria. 🚁💧🔥

Great to have the team on the ground at Rotortech this week — connecting with industry peers and sharing ideas that keep our sector moving forward. 🚁🇦🇺

A highlight was Richard (Butterworth, our Head of Flight Operations) joining the panel on “Building Effective Training Systems,” sharing practical insights from across our training and operational experience.

Always valuable to be part of the conversation shaping the future of aviation.

On Friday, one of our Bell 412 helicopters was tasked to assist in the search for a missing seafarer in Port Phillip Bay.

Working alongside the broader multi-agency response, our crew conducted aerial search operations in challenging conditions. During the mission, our aircraft located the missing individual.

This outcome is never the one anyone hopes for. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the seafarer at this difficult time.

We would also like to acknowledge the professionalism and coordination of all agencies involved in the search effort, and the quiet dedication of those who undertake these missions when called upon.

Sadly, today we say farewell to "Shadow Cat" 😼 — the Airbus AS332L1 Super Puma (VH-KSI) — as it leaves Australia to commence its next chapter with a northern hemisphere operator.

Since joining the Kestrel Aviation fleet in 2021, Shadow Cat has represented a step-change in heavy aerial firefighting capability within Australia. It was the first aerial firefighting contracted Super Puma in the country and went on to achieve a world-first: conducting incident free aerial firebombing operations at night — redefining what is possible in aerial emergency response for the type.

Beyond its technical achievements, the aircraft played a meaningful role in supporting Australian communities, operating in some of the most challenging environments and contributing to safer, more effective incident response outcomes. Its introduction demonstrated the value of large, multi-mission aircraft in complex and evolving fireground conditions both day and night.

Despite demonstrating a unique and proven capability, the aircraft was not retained under recent procurement processes. However it will continue to protect communities, joining other Super Puma's as a proven airframe in the northern hemisphere fire arena.

As the aircraft departs, it does represent a loss of sovereign capability within Australia’s aerial firefighting and emergency management landscape — one that showcased innovation, adaptability, and the potential for enhanced night operations at scale in a modern airframe.

This aircraft’s story is ultimately one of people. We extend our sincere thanks to the pilots, engineers, refuellers, and the many support personnel who stood behind Shadow Cat — often around the clock — to deliver this capability safely, compliantly, and effectively. Your professionalism and commitment made every milestone possible.

We are proud of what Shadow Cat achieved during its time in Australia and are grateful to everyone who played a role in its journey.

We wish it and its new operators every success in the next phase of its journey.
