Today, on International Day of the Air Traffic Controller, we’re recognising the precision, concentration + calm professionalism of the people helping keep aircraft movements safe.

A safe airfield relies on knowing what’s happening across it every day.

At , our Wildlife Hazard Management Plan helps the team monitor wildlife activity, identify risks + respond with the right mitigation measures.

That can include bird dispersal around runways, taxiways + aprons, so if you spot a little whip-snapping action out on the airfield, there’s a good reason for it.

A fitting reminder to close Airport Safety Week that many of the actions keeping our airport safe happen behind the scenes.

You may have heard us talk about FOD before… + there’s a reason it keeps making a comeback.

Foreign Object Debris, or FOD, can be anything from a loose piece of equipment to a stray object left airside. Small item, potentially big impact.

During Airport Safety Week, it’s a timely reminder that every action can influence safety, including the simple act of spotting something that shouldn’t be there.

Every day, our team keeps an eye out across runways, taxiways + aprons for potential hazards, making sure items are picked up, reported + removed from airside areas.

It might not be the flashiest part of airport operations, but it plays an important role in keeping safe.

Some safety messages are worth repeating. This is definitely one of them.

Every action + every conversation can influence safety.

At , that includes preparing for situations we hope never happen. Emergency exercises help our teams, tenants + operators understand their roles, practise how they would respond + strengthen the way we work together.

From aircraft incident simulations to terminal evacuations + fire response drills, these scenarios give everyone involved the chance to put plans into practice, test communication + build confidence before it is ever needed.

They also reinforce one of the key messages of Airport Safety Week this year: safe airports are built through strong relationships, shared responsibility + people speaking up, working together + staying prepared.

This week, we’re recognising the planning, practice + collaboration that happens behind the scenes to help keep ready.

Our friends at Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria have been out to check out their larger-than-life Oceans to Outback billboard at , + we think it’s looking pretty good!

We’re proud to support Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria + their Oceans to Outback challenge, encouraging Australians to walk, run or ride to raise vital funds for the Flying Doctor.

A big cause deserves a big billboard, + we’re pretty happy to help spread the word.

We’re so excited to have flights to King Island back ✈️

Sharp Airlines will once again connect directly with King Island, restoring an important link for visitors, residents + those travelling to Melbourne for business, health + personal reasons.

The seasonal service will run through to 30 April 2027, starting with four flights a week before increasing over the busy summer period.

With bookings now open, we’re looking forward to welcoming King Island travellers back through Essendon Fields Airport. 💙

There’s something pretty special about a building that’s been part of the landscape for more than 80 years.

Built in 1940, Hangar 2 is one of ’s most recognisable heritage structures, with its distinctive sawtooth roof making it just as impressive from above as it is from Wirraway Rd.

It’s a reminder of the airport’s long aviation history + how many stories are held within the buildings that still shape the precinct today.

A familiar sight, a little piece of history + still looking good after all these years.
