In 1928, Essendon Aerodrome had a front-row seat to aviation history.

Sir Charles Kingsford Smith + the crew of the Southern Cross drew enormous crowds after completing the first ever Trans-Pacific flight from the USA to Australia, a journey that made headlines around the world.

Smithy returned to Essendon many times, including in 1931 as he set out to prove a regular air service between Australia + England was possible. His ambition helped shape the future of international aviation, with Essendon firmly part of the story.

An extraordinary moment in the airfield’s history, + one worth remembering.

105 YEARS OF THE FIELDS 🎂

We're celebrating 105 years since being officially gazetted as an airfield. Over the past century, the airport has evolved alongside Melbourne, growing from a pioneering aviation hub into a dynamic mixed-use precinct that supports businesses, creates jobs + connects communities.

Today it remains one of Australia's most important general aviation airports, while continuing to attract investment, innovation + opportunity.

Thanks to everyone who has helped shape our story so far.

A little slice of Essendon Fields Airport history ✈️

ANSETT-ANA Bell 47J-2 Ranger VH-INV pictured in the hangar at Essendon Airport in July 1963 - a reminder of the many aviation chapters that have unfolded right here on the airfield.

Greg Manderson was inside, ready for his first helicopter ride from the Yarra Heliport to Essendon. His dad worked at Ansett, Greg did too, + many of his cousins also became part of the Ansett story.

Today, is still home to aviation, business + community, with plenty of stories held in its hangars, runways + surrounding neighbourhoods.

In 1948, a 16-year-old named Pat LaManna stepped off a plane at with no English, no money, + a dream of a new life in Australia.

He spotted a large red brick building nearby, a TAA workshop at the time, with no idea that decades later his family would turn that very building into one of Australia's best-loved supermarkets.

From a fruit shop in West Preston in 1953, to becoming Australia's largest banana wholesaler, to opening LaManna Direct in an old hangar right here at Essendon Fields in 2010, three generations of the LaManna family have built something remarkable, just metres from where it all began.

Today, a visit to Essendon Fields isn't complete without a pitstop at LaManna.

A pretty special piece of aviation + Essendon Fields history.
