Compass Expeditions

Compass Expeditions Our Adventure Motorcycle Tours are some of the most spectacular journeys on this planet – join us

Compass Expeditions was formed off the back of an incredible fund-raising ride from London to Magadan, in Siberia back in 2005. We started with one Toyota Landcruiser as a support vehicle, five bikes and a lot of enthusiasm. Our expeditions are the experience of a lifetime, crossing continents to explore some of the most unique and beautiful places on earth.

Our explorers are on the final road after 99 days of Ultimate South America!

Riding triumphantly into UNESCO listed Cartagena (the absolutely stunning medieval fortress city located on the Caribbean, renowned as one of the most beautiful cites in all of Colombia) they spend the last night of a 100-day epic ride exploring this fantastic city and preparing for their journey home.

Where possible we endeavour to get the latest model BMWs and take a great deal of care when selecting bike suppliers.

However, working in remote destinations sometimes makes finding decent bikes extremely difficult. In Mongolia in 2019, for example, we purchased 8 used BMW F800 GS motorcycles and shipped them to Mongolia, then sent our BMW qualified mechanic to Ulaan Baatar to train our local supplier, all to ensure good bike supply.

When you travel with Compass Expeditions, you can be confident that we're doing everything possible to make the best it can be.

"If I could go back and start it again tomorrow, I would jump at the chance!"

Trail of the Incas 2026 reached its exciting conclusion last month when our newly minted grouped of "friends for life" arrived back in Santago, Peru following 24 days of exhilaration.

We loved reading this account of the trip from Kathlene:
"We completed our Compass Expeditions "Trail of the Incas" tour two weeks ago. The trip through Chile, Bolivia and Peru was challenging in every way -- physically, psychically, emotionally -- and if I could go back and start it again tomorrow, I would jump at the chance!

"In the way of these things, the tour description (and the disclaimers and releases) are both perfectly accurate and completely inadequate at capturing the beauty, grandeur, excitement, drama, intensity and just plain fun of the tour. I can't imagine a better way to see this part of the world than by motorcycle -- the almost Martian landscapes of northern Chile, the jagged, snowy peaks of the Andes, the colorful fields of quinoa (dotted with colorfully-decorated alpacas), and the sprawling, raucous cities that rolled cinematically past.

"Except for the epic Death Road in Bolivia (two-up on a KLR650), we rode the entire trip two-up on a virtually new BMW R1300GS and it performed impeccably. Our lodgings, ranging from glamorous to very simple, were reliably comfortable and welcoming. Food was fresh and plentiful, and included a trout lunch that was still swimming when we arrived at the restaurant, and improbably excellent pizza at 12,000 feet in Uyuni, Bolivia.
We were so fortunate to have the excellent leadership of Carlo di Todaro as our riding guide and Adele Levi managing logistics and navigating the chase vehicle. With the welcome addition of Pete Vorst behind the camera (and occasionally the wheel of the van), the Compass team brought reassuring competence, authentic enthusiasm, and a true sense of adventure to every day of the tour.

"And while Compass can't guarantee this, we also benefited from making the journey with a truly fun, worldly, good hearted and supportive group of riders. Just an incredibly rewarding, deeply moving and wildly enjoyable experience. Ten stars on a scale of 1 to 5." - Kathlene Collins

Our guests adore the authentic local experiences which comprise our tours - a plethora of local experiences awaits, sometimes well off the “tourist trail”. Witness the dying tradition of eagle hunting in Kyrgyzstan, stay at a ger camp on the vast Mongolian Steppe, or try a scenic flight over Mt McKinley - North America's highest peak.

We provide value for money and thoroughly research trips to provide unique itineraries. We invite people to look at the competition to see what’s “not included” and pay particular attention to actual tour length and those who don't have the final night’s accommodation included. We're not always the cheapest, but we might be the best.

Endless star laden skies, incredible wildlife experiences, unique cultures...

An incredible journey through Southern Africa that has it all, from epic wildlife experiences in renowned national parks to evening gatherings of wildlife at waterholes within private game reserves. We experience the world’s oldest desert and visit towering mountains of sand that glow red at sunrise, we ride breathtaking coastal roads that hug the cliffs above the shoreline and meet cultures that defy belief, so removed from our own. If remote empty tracks, endless star laden skies, incredible wildlife experiences, unique African cultures and diverse stunning landscapes are your thing, then this epic trip is your ride - here's the first week:

Day 1: Your Cape Town airport transfer will take you directly to our joining hotel, ready for an early start tomorrow. Today you will meet your crew for your tour briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Departing Cape Town, we take the legendary Chapman's Peak Drive with epic views of the Atlantic ocean and ride around False Bay through tiny coastal villages before entering the Overberg region to Arniston, near the southernmost tip of Africa.

Day 3: We take a ride out to the southernmost point on the African continent, at L’Agulhas where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet, before turning north into the Klein Karoo via the wonderful Tradouws Pass to the award winning Big 5 game reserve, Aquila Private Game Reserve where we go on our first safari.

Day 4: Today’s ride sees us hit the dirt tracks of the mighty Cederberg Wilderness Area and visit the extraordinary Staadal Caves & San rock art site with its 5,000 year old rock art before reaching the frontier town of Clanwilliam.

Day 5: A short ride today to the wonderful Papkuilsfontein Homestead with the magnificent Oorlogskloof Canyon on the property. We overnight at this superb homestead that has been in the same family for 6 generations and take a farm tour of this magnificent remote farm.

Day 6: A longer ride day today, we go via Nieuwoudtville and visit an amazing dust covered motorcycle collection before crossing into the Western Cape region for our overnight stay at the wonderful Springbok, our last night in South Africa.

Day 7: Crossing into Namibia, we enter an utterly spectacular landscape of vast deserts, enormous canyons and hot springs. We overnight at the amazing Gondwana Roadhouse, with its Namibian transport theme.
With over a week more to go on this incredible tour, in the words of a Shelli from, Canada who previously joined us on Safari Africa, you'll see "parts of Africa that few will see".

While every continent which hosts our tours each has its own unique charms, the food and accomodation on our Spain, Portugal and Morocco expedition certainly benefits from something a little bit extra as you explore not one but two continents in Southern Europe and Northern Africa, riding from the hills of Lisbon to the sands of the Sahara.

You will encounter an incredible diversity in peoples, landscapes and cultures, exploring the history of Southern Europe and Northern Africa, from the Romans to the Muslims, the Moors to the Christians, maritime explorers to the Conquistadors; they all left their mark on this historically rich part of the world.

We experience life beneath the “tourist surface” as we ride the less travelled paths via country roads, barely a single lane wide, get wonderfully lost in the ancient medinas of Morocco, ditch our bikes in favour of camels as we ride into the endless Sahara and explore ancient Kasbahs and palm filled oases.

Join us on this classic, all paved, ride never to be forgotten - departing again in April 2027: https://compassexpeditions.com/tours/spain-portugal-and-morocco/

Why do our guests travel with Compass time after time?

🛌 Hand-picked accommodation - ranging from 3 to 5 star, we stay in unique lodges, ger camps & hotels on all our tours. Our accommodations are chosen for their uniqueness, location and where possible are family owned and run. Our accommodation choices enrich your travel experience and are what turns a great trip into an incredible one.

🍲 Food - when you book a tour with us we include more than just a welcome and farewell meal. On all our rides we include breakfast every day and picnic or restaurant lunches on all travelling days. The picnic lunches we prepare on the spot, we don’t pre-make sandwiches and let them fester inside a hot topbox until lunchtime or corral you into a local truckstop. On most tours we include the majority of dinners at carefully chosen restaurants, an important consideration when comparing tour companies.

🎭 Cultural experiences – we delve a little deeper. Our rides don’t just rush to top sights and major cities, we really explore the lands we are travelling in and take in those unforgettable views. We don’t simply race from point A to B and wherever possible we support local communities.

Book with us and you'll probably book with us again!
