Our clients are long term travellers and need a lot of gear for extended off-grid stays in a range of conditions. Given most caravans have limited payload, once water tanks are full, this can be hard to achieve. The answer here was an Iveco Daily 4x4 Light Truck (drivable on a car licence up to 4495kg GVM). If more payload is needed, it can be easily upgraded to 5500kg on an NB2 Light Rigid licence. Tools, extra fridge, generator, bikes, kayaks and more can be stored in the huge canopy, for every adventure.The only limitation is the BTC of 3500, but it is easy to keep the van light when you have so much capacity in the vehicle.

The truth is that approximately 85% of what we weigh fails on one or more limits, which is pretty much the case every year. How positive to have such a well paired combination as this one, coming in well below all car and van limits. Most of us don't think of a Kia Sorento as a tow vehicle, but it delivered the goods, matched with a small/light van. Our clients put a lot of time and research into the purchase, which was a downsize of car and van from their previous combo. In our opinion, they got it right. Not only does it look great, this nimble set-up will take them new places for years to come. ✅️✅️✅️

On our annual weighing trip to Queensland, we recently weighed a brand new Urban off-road van in Toowoomba. Whilst all the car and van weights were compliant, we quickly identified that the caravan wheels were not sharing the load evenly. Once we adjusted the hitch height, lowering it by more than 100mm, the weight share was within 10kg. Travel height can really impact both TBM and axle load sharing, so it is essential to get it correct. It is just one of the many towing metrics we report on, with every weight assessment. Our client will now enjoy better handling and stability with his new van, also reducing unnecessary wear.

WEIGH OF THE WEEK 💥💥💥

Weighing mates is always double the fun and can even include a bit of gentle competition. First up was a Y62 Patrol (upgraded) and a new Crusader. Second was a Toyota LC 200 and a Salute Senator. There were some minor issues identified with each combination, but we took the time to sort these, as we went along. Combo 1, too light on the TBM and too close on car rear axle. Combo 2, too close to GVM and over on car front axle when not towing. Identifying and fixing issues like these protects your safety and your investment. 🥇🥇🥇
