Forecasts Indicate Beef Production Will Exceed 3 million Tonnes

Australian beef production is expected to exceed 3 million tonnes in 2026, a new national record. High beef production is supported by improved seasonal conditions and productivity gains.

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) forecasts that cattle slaughter will reach 9.6 million head in 2026, increasing from 9.3 million in 2025. Stuart Bull, the Market Information Manager at MLA, reports that the national cattle herd proved more resilient despite the historically high slaughter levels. In previous years, the high slaughter levels would have led to a sharper contraction of the national herd.

Only a few citrus-growing areas in Australia have been granted access to export to the US market. Only specific areas such as Riverland, Riverina, and Sunraysia that have had long-term fruit fly-free status export fruit to the US.

Citrus Australia reckons that up to 30% of Australia’s total citrus production area is excluded from the US market. Most of the citrus exports are destined for Asian markets that are not as lucrative. Growers are missing out on approximately $150 million annually in export earnings.

Australian Beef May Utilize Unused Uruguay Quota in China

Australia may be in a position to export beef into China tariff-free in the next three months. Australia has been thrown a lifeline, as it can utilize the unused quota allocated to Uruguay.

Australia and Brazil are eager to negotiate deals to reallocate or transfer unused Uruguay quota. Australia has exhausted its 2026 quota, triggering a steep 55% tariff on additional beef exports. China announced a new Safeguard Tariff on imported beef in January, allocating 205,000t to Australia.

The Australian beef industry explored measures such as exclusion of bones and chilled beef from the quota and filling unused quotas. China was happy to entertain the idea provided the quota-holding country cooperates.

Container Schedule Reliability at Shanghai Drops to 12%

Asian ports are grappling with severe congestion, resulting in container ship on-time arrivals falling to 32.2% in August. The average delay for late vessel arrivals has increased to 7.28 days.

Major ports in China have been impacted heavily due to multiple typhoons in the region. Schedule reliability at major ports dropped to 23.9% in August from 35.8% in July.

Shanghai and Ningbo recorded the largest drop in schedule reliability, dropping to 12.2% and 16.9%, respectively. Both Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan are the world’s largest container ports ranked for throughput in the first half of the year.

At Singapore, the world’s largest container transhipment hub, schedule reliability dropped to 32.4% in August from 42.6% in July.

Only a Third of Global Container Shipping On Time

Global container shipping schedule reliability continues in free fall for the third consecutive month. Only 29% of container ships arrived on time, with performance on Far East-Europe lanes nearing pandemic figures.

The average delay rose from 4.2 days to 5.1 days in August, as reliability declined.

Late vessels and longer delays make a sustained recovery increasingly unlikely. The situation is further complicated by the upcoming peak season associated with China’s late-September and early-October holidays.
