💙 Behind Every Wrinkle Is a Lifetime of Stories 💙

Throughout October, we're continuing to celebrate International Day of Older Persons and the incredible value older generations bring to our lives.

Sometimes we look at an older person and simply see their age. But behind those grey hairs and wrinkles is someone who was once young, with dreams, ambitions, hopes and plans for the future.

Someone who has known love and loss, faced challenges, experienced heartbreak and celebrated life's many highs and lows. Someone who has made mistakes, learned lessons, raised families, worked hard and witnessed a world change in ways younger generations can barely imagine.

And inside them, that young person is still ther

Our older generations carry a lifetime of wisdom, strength, resilience and knowledge that no textbook or internet search could ever truly replace. There is so much we can learn from them if we simply take the time to listen.

At Driving Miss Daisy Nowra & Ulladulla, we're fortunate to spend time with some wonderful older members of our community. Every person has their own story, and it's a privilege to hear even a small part of it.

So this October, let's celebrate not just the years they've lived, but the lives they've led, the challenges they've overcome and everything they still have to share.

🌼 Celebrating Older Australians Throughout October! 🌼

October 1st marked International Day of Older Persons, but we think our older generations deserve more than just one day of recognition, so we're celebrating them throughout the month of October!

It's an opportunity to recognise the contributions older people have made, the experiences and knowledge they share, and the important role they continue to play in our families and communities.

At Driving Miss Daisy Nowra & Ulladulla, we're fortunate to spend time with some wonderful older people every day. We hear their stories, share a few laughs and often learn a thing or two along the way!

We also know how important it is for people to maintain their independence, stay socially connected and continue enjoying the things that matter to them.

Whether it's getting to an appointment, catching up with friends, doing the weekly shopping or simply getting out and about, we're pleased to play a small part in helping make those everyday activities possible.

Age should never be a barrier to staying involved, making choices and enjoying life.

We would the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the older members of our community — not just for what they've contributed over the years, but for everything they continue to bring to our lives today.

What does a service with Driving Miss Daisy Nowra actually look like?
It’s often the little things that make a difference, so we thought we’d share what you can expect when you book a service with us.
We pick you up at the time you’ve requested and greet you at your door. If it’s raining, we’ll come to the door with an umbrella so you can stay as dry as possible. If you’re a new client, you’ll receive a little welcome gift/goody bag on your first service.
Once you’re settled into one of our clean, comfortable vehicles, there’s a bottle of water waiting for you. We also keep small packets of biscuits in our cars for anyone who needs to take medication with food — or simply gets a little hungry while we’re out. We even carry jelly beans for those times when someone may need a quick sugar boost or just feels like something sweet.
Then the service is really up to you.
If you’re going to an appointment, we can either drop you at the door, or we can park the car, walk in with you, stay with you in the waiting room or support you in the appointment if that’s what you need.
If it’s a social outing, shopping trip or just getting out and about for the day, we’re there to assist as much or as little as you’d like and on the way home, if there’s time within your booking, we’re more than happy to make that extra stop — perhaps to grab some bread and milk, call into the chemist for a script, or pick up something you need.
Family members or friends are also very welcome to come along with you at no additional cost, subject to available seating.
There’s no one set way a Driving Miss Daisy service has to look.
Some clients need a little assistance. Some need a lot. Some simply want a friendly face, good conversation and a comfortable ride.
You tell us what you need, and we’ll do our best to make your day that little bit easier. 💙🌼

WHAT’S ON IN OUR COMMUNITY – A LITTLE SOMETHING CLOSE TO HOME!

We love sharing what’s happening in our wonderful local community, and this time we’re sharing something a little more personal!

Yesterday afternoon, Jervis Bay Brewery hosted the poetry book launch of local author Gordon (Gordy) McDonald.

Now, a little confession from me (Renee) - Gordy happens to be my husband, so I might be showing just a tiny bit of favouritism with this community post! 😂 But we love supporting local people, and I couldn't resist sharing this one!

It was a fantastic afternoon, with over 80 people in attendance, made even more special by the lovely support of many of our Driving Miss Daisy team, who came along to celebrate with us. We were also delighted to have one of our lovely clients join us for the afternoon!
Gordy’s book is a collection of poems inspired by everyday life, the people we meet and the world as he sees it. Some will make you smile, others might tug at the heartstrings, and each tells its own little story and we're very proud to see it finally in print.

A special thank you to our friend, Shoalhaven Councillor Jemma Tribe for kindly taking on the role of MC, introducing Gordy and helping make the launch such a lovely occasion. We really appreciated your time and support!
Books are available for $15 each, and if anyone in our community would like to purchase a copy, please send us a message through our Facebook Messenger and we'll happily organise one for you.

A big thank you to Jervis Bay Brewery for hosting the afternoon and to everyone who came along, purchased a book or offered their support. It really was a lovely afternoon surrounded by wonderful people.

What does a Driving Miss Daisy Wheelchair access vehicle service look like?

If you or someone you care for uses a wheelchair, you might wonder what actually happens when you book our Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)
It starts much the same as any Driving Miss Daisy service - at your door. We arrive at your requested time and come to greet you. If it’s raining, we’ll be there with an umbrella. If you’re travelling with family, a friend or support person, they’re very welcome to come along too at no additional cost.
Our WAV has a rear ramp, making access easier for wheelchair users and mobility aids. Once safely secured inside, the wheelchair position is up near the driver, rather than separated at the back of the vehicle. We think this is important — you’re part of the conversation and part of the journey, just like everyone else.
There’ll be a bottle of water waiting for you, and we also carry little extras such as individual packets of biscuits if you need something with medication or simply get hungry while you’re out, as well as jelly beans for those times someone may need a quick sugar boost.
And then, you tell us what you need.
We can simply drive you to your destination and drop you at the door, or your Daisy Companion can assist you further. We can accompany you into a medical or allied health appointment, stay with you, help with a shopping trip, attend a social outing or community activity with you, or simply take you out for a scenic drive and some company.
Our WAV can accommodate up to five passengers, or five passengers plus a wheelchair client, so outings don't always have to be something you do alone.
For us, wheelchair accessible transport isn't just about having the right vehicle. It's about making sure the person travelling in it feels comfortable, included and supported from the moment we arrive until they're safely home again. 🌼💙

🌸💗 BERRY IS TURNING PINK! 💗🌸

What a beautiful sight to see the lovely town of Berry getting behind Pink Up Berry in support of the McGrath Foundation!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it's wonderful to see our local community coming together, spreading awareness and raising funds to support people and families affected by cancer.
A big thank you to everyone involved in Pink Up Berry, from the local businesses decorating their shopfronts to the volunteers, organisers and community members supporting such a worthwhile cause.
Small communities, big hearts — that's what makes our beautiful South Coast so special!

Mental Health Matters
At Driving Miss Daisy Nowra & Ulladulla, we believe that caring for our community goes far beyond the services we provide.
Life can be challenging, and sometimes the people around us are facing struggles we know nothing about. Mental health affects people of all ages and walks of life, and no one should feel they have to face difficult times alone.
We wanted to share this important information from the Su***de Prevention Collaborative Illawarra Shoalhaven, which provides contact details for local mental health services and 24-hour support.
Whether you're going through a difficult time yourself, worried about a loved one, or simply need someone to talk to, there are people and services ready to listen and help.
