Duneske Clydesdales

Duneske Clydesdales The Stewart-Koster family and friends, breeding, working , showing, riding and enjoying Clydesdale horses in Queensland ! From 1994 to 2003.

We also offer a wedding carriage with a pair of Clydesdales, a box waggon and pair, for horse-drawn funerals, a cart for formals ... Ian Stewart-Koster has been working clydesdales since 1980 after going 'on the road' with Doug Bunker's team of four, travelling through southern Qld, then working in Sydney and UK, driving draught horses in two horse-drawn omnibuses. Duneske Clydesdale Stud was star

ted in 1984, and we've been enjoying the breeding and working process ever since. Ian ran 14 'hands-on' schools teaching people to handle and drive clydesdales, as well as 3 amatuer harness making schools, and two 4-in-hand teams driving schools. Our children enjoyed taking the clydies to pony club, and also competing in junior handler classes at local shows - which all stood them in good stead for learning to break-in/ train and show them as they grew older. We've competed with singles, pairs, team of four, and once a team of six in-hand at Brisbane Royal Show. From a led-horse perspective, we've had a particularly great decade and a half or more of successes at 'The Royal' with stock we've bred,
(eight adult championships, five supremes, seven reserves, seven juniors, three gelding champions) as well as significant success at the well known Gatton heavy horse field days, twice winning TWO Supreme Champion of All Breeds in the same year. Hannah Willshire has won the Heavy Horse Under Saddle class at Gatton Field Days several times, with several different horses, and the same at Brisbane Royal. We've also gone out to non-competitive events: the Kilkivan Great Trail Ride, the Surat to Yuleba Cobb & Co reenactment, and local town parades (Crows Nest & Goombungee) over the years. The list goes on, but most of all we enjoy working them at home- it's a family affair!

Our attempt at the 2026 Brisbane Ekka, to replicate the angle and look of that iconic old Furphy photo featuring U.R.B ('Cocky') Robinson.

We almost got it spot-on! ;)

Farriery: The 2026 Australasian Championships at the Ekka.

Here is a 4 minute summary with captions, showing some forging and fitting shoes in the 3-Man draught shoeing competition that we provided all the clydesdales for this year.

Many thanks to the PFBA inc.

P.S. some elements may seem to be out of sequence- that's because several teams were at different stages on different horses or at making their specimen shoe.
Each team had to prepare a hoof, make a shoe, and fit it, plus make a specimen to match a given one.

Kathy Ellem Artist chose our/Hannah's stallion Lenny as a subject for an oil-painting workshop she hosted in March.

We kept it under wraps, (with much difficulty!) then finally gave it to Hannah as a combined birthday and house-warming present a few days ago!

So, we can show it at last- Hannah, Earlsfield King of the Castle (Lenny), and the oil-painting.
(photos by Tommy Willshire!)

Enjoy!

On the last day of the 2026 Ekka, here are two snaps of a common sight for us backstage for the last 10 nights- Rodney Sansom 's camels and Brenden Trace 's team in front of and beside us.

It's been a great show, and a privilege to be a part of Dave Manchon's Rooftop Express EkkaNITES historic show, ably also coordinated by Shelley Thomas .

Sincere thanks, from Neil & ian

Ekka Farriery update: the winning team were from West Australia, and shod Ray's near front hoof.
Second place were another WA team who did Ray's off front hoof. Their specimen shoe was also excellent.
3rd place of 11 teams were locals Bruce Donaldson, Mark O'Leary, and Andy McDonald, who shod Beauty's off front hoof.

As a matter of interest, we took Ray down to the official measurer, who announced him at 17 hands & 1/4" in half inch shoes, or 16. 3-3/4 barefooted.
Ray isn't 22 months old yet!

Our 'thistle' motif dray harness: Here's a 1 minute walk around of our thistle harness with Beauty in the Furphy last night, while marshalling backstage at the Ekka for our 9th night show.

The saddle was an original show dray saddle imported from Scotland to West Australia circa 1925.
We bought it in 'rather dilapidated condition' about 10 years ago on Facebook marketplace, then made 35 new 'faceplate spots' in 5/8" diameter solid nickel, fitted a new girth and backstrap, and Peter PeterandEileen Castles made new panels for it.

I then designed, made, and ornamented new breeching & backstrap to suit the thistle theme , plus housen to suit, and a breast-drop & winkers ( both accidentally left at home!) I also made the plumes.

It really attracts great positive attention each night at the show!

Friday 14th at the Ekka: The 3-man Draught shoeing competition.

The PFBA borrowed all four Clydesdales we had left on the grounds for their annual Ekka shoeing competition, and the standard was high!

(This is about our 34th or 35th year of supplying Clydesdales for their Ekka shoeing competitions.)

These three still photos will suffice, until we upload a video compilation.

Beauty completed her 8th night in the EkkaNITES show pulling our Furphy watercart. She's much more relaxed now, which is nice- it'd be easy to be a bit peeved since we've been here for 8 days now!
