A busy couple months here is a couple things we have been doing !
1️⃣ Exmouth – Jetwave Jasmin | New Shafts, Props & Bearings
Quick trip to Exmouth after surveying to AMSA standards and collecting new shafts from Jetwave Marine.
Vessel had a history of vibration, so bearings were dry-fitted and machined to suit housings, checking for any tube misalignment before final installation.
Once glued in and shafts fitted, we carried out a full shaft alignment followed by sea trials.

2️⃣ Interference-Fit Coupling Conversion
Instead of machining a new coupling for a gearbox change, we produced a custom interference-fit fl**ge.
The fl**ge was machined directly on the vessel’s shaft to ensure absolute concentricity and driveline alignment.
Using controlled heating, the fl**ge was thermally expanded and pressed into the existing coupling to form an integrated assembly.
Once cooled naturally, we completed the weld using the machined weld-prep groove for additional structural strength.
A precise, cost-effective solution that avoids full coupling replacement.

3️⃣ Thomascraft 43 – Full Repower Integration
Repower on a 43’ Thomascraft including supply and installation of a new PSS seal, seal carrier, and exhaust system using the supplied mixer.
Completed the smaller but essential tasks: new fuel lines, wiring considerations, and the installation of a stern thruster unit.
Solid engine mounts were machined and adjusted to correctly position and level the new engine.
Final driveline alignment was completed to manufacturer tolerances, ensuring long-term reliability and correct shaft geometry under load.

4️⃣ Umbra – Routine Maintenance & Shaft System Overhaul
Umbra logs serious miles, so regular engineering oversight is essential.
This service interval included new seal kits through the Simplan seals, new shaft bearings, and a full driveline inspection due to the vessel’s high travel hours.
Stabilisers were also due for scheduled maintenance — each unit weighing over 2.5 tonnes, requiring specialist handling and attention

THE GENSET THAT NEVER DIED 💪

We seem to find the weaknesses in any of the equipment we use or operate but one piece of machinery that never gave up despite the odds was a 25kva Kohler genset in the boat we installed in 2007.

Sold to us by Ray Grose of Waterfront Marine in Fremantle he always said they were a good unit and looking back we totally agree.

We service and look after every piece of machinery we own sticking to manufacturer service guidelines and all the other usual recommendations and it was the same with the Kohler genset.

Of course the first 20,000 running hours were sweet. Just things like oil changes, maybe a few new salt water pumps over the journey and all the other usual things you might do or replace from new to 20,000 hours.

It was after the 20,000 mark due to the fact we accidentally got sold a different type of oil that it developed an oil leak. Progressively over time it got worse to the point we used to put about a litre of oil in it each day. In the end we just had a container under it and just poured the oil straight back in. It was an ageing piece of equipment and we didn’t have the money or time to replace it.

We tried off the shelf oil stop leak products just about every brand imaginable and interestingly enough some actually did work although nothing was ever a long term full proof result.

Then we had water leaks and other minor issues but the genset never died. It also had a lot of safety sensors that would shut it down sometimes but in general it kept doing the job.

It limped to 35,000 hours and then the digital hour meter stopped functioning so we just logged our days fishing manually in a book and worked out manually when we needed to do oil changes etc.

By our estimates it got to around 46,000 hours which was about 8 years in the boat. The putting oil in it every day and all its other quirks just got too difficult and we decided to buy a new one. Rebuilding it for us wasn’t an option due to downtime.

Interestingly enough we actually traded it in. The new owner knew about its oil leak and minor blemishes but planned on rebuilding it anyway.

We aren’t sure if it ever went back into operation or not but with a rebuild and a few new gaskets it probably would have been great for a long time after.

It once run for 3 weeks straight apart from being turned off momentarily to check levels or change oil in 3 or 4 back to back fishing trips.

It was a bloody good piece of machinery that never let us down. We went with a different brand after that opting to go for a more simple style of genset with less safety sensors but we will never forget that Kohler. 46,000 hours is a good innings no matter what.
