Ongoing volatility in global fuel markets, driven in part by the current situation in the Middle East, continues to place pressure on diesel pricing worldwide. As Australia relies heavily on imported fuel, these fluctuations are flowing through to transport costs across the supply chain, including domestic freight movements.

Middle East Escalation: What It Means for Australian Supply Chains

Global tensions in the Middle East are beginning to impact international freight routes, particularly between Australia, Europe and the Gulf region.

Several ocean carriers are diverting vessels away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal, with many services now routing via the Cape of Good Hope. This may result in transit delays of 10–14 days, increased schedule changes and higher freight costs.

Air freight services may also experience rerouting, longer transit times and capacity constraints, particularly through key hubs such as Dubai and Doha.

While global supply chains remain operational, forward planning and flexibility are becoming increasingly important.

At Transitainer WA, we are actively monitoring developments, working closely with carriers and identifying alternative routing options to minimise disruption for our clients.

If you have upcoming shipments to or from Europe or the Middle East, we encourage early planning to secure space and manage potential delays.

Do You Import Fabricated Structural Steel?
The Productivity Commission has launched a safeguard inquiry into fabricated structural steel products. The outcome could mean new duties on these goods — and free trade certificates won’t remove them.
What’s at stake?
If safeguards are imposed, additional tariffs will apply to structural steel sections (tariff headings 7308.10 and 7308.90) from any country and any supplier. These headings cover a broad range of items, including:
Steel or iron structures and parts such as bridges, towers, roofs, doors, windows, balustrades, pillars, and columns
Plates, rods, angles, shapes, sections, tubes, and similar items prepared for use in structures
Why now?
The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) has argued that rising imports are harming local industry. Their submission highlights:
A 38.7% increase in FSS imports between 2020 and 2024
Imports rising from 15% to 26% of domestic supply between 2020–21 and 2022–23
Import prices sitting 50–70% below the global average from 2020 to 2023
A 12% drop in Australian FSS production from 2023 to 2024
Safeguards are designed as temporary measures to address sudden import surges. If applied, they would initially run for four years, with the option to extend for another four.
What should importers do?
Submission paperwork is expected this month. You can subscribe for updates via the Productivity Commission website:
https://www.pc.gov.au/inquiries-and-research/steel-safeguards/
Once submissions open, all interested parties can register and provide input. We strongly recommend reviewing your supply chain now to understand your exposure and consider preparing a submission.

Chinese New Year 2026: Final Reminder for Upcoming Shipments
With Chinese New Year commencing on 17 February 2026, factory shutdowns and reduced logistics capacity across China are now imminent.

As a reminder, many suppliers will close for one to three weeks, and delays are common both in the lead-up to and immediately after the holiday as production slows, vessel space tightens, and operations gradually resume.

What Clients Should Be Aware of
• As the holiday period approaches, shipments may be impacted by:
• Factory closures or reduced production capacity
• Limited vessel and airfreight availability
• Congestion following factory reopenings
Shipments that are not finalised or booked in advance may experience delays or rolled sailings.

Key Actions to Take Now

To minimise disruption, clients should:

âś” Confirm supplier shutdown dates and final cut-off times
âś” Ensure shipping and customs documentation is finalised
âś” Secure freight bookings where possible, particularly for post-holiday movements

For a more detailed overview of Chinese New Year planning considerations, you can revisit our earlier Chinese New Year 2026 planning update. https://transitainerwa.com.au/reminder-chinese-new-year-2026-plan-ahead-to-avoid-shipping-delays/

At Transitainer WA, we continue to work closely with customers to manage shipments through the Chinese New Year period. If you have upcoming cargo or require assistance with scheduling, please contact our team.

Wishing you a prosperous Year of the Horse.

🚢 ABF Border Holds: What Importers Need to Know
Transitainer is continuing to support customers impacted by ongoing Australian Border Force (ABF) Border Holds, particularly through Sydney, with flow-on effects now being felt across multiple Australian ports.
While Border Holds are essential for border and biosecurity compliance, prolonged delays are creating significant cost exposure for importers — including container detention and wharf storage charges, even when delays are completely outside their control.
When a container is on ABF hold, it cannot be collected, unpacked, or returned — yet detention and storage fees can still accrue, with some storage invoices reaching tens of thousands of dollars per container.
đź’ˇ What importers can do:
• Submit customs documentation early
• Respond quickly to customs queries
• Request additional free time from shipping lines where possible
Transitainer supports industry calls for a fair approach: where government intervention prevents container movement, detention and storage charges should be suspended.

Soooo if you’re trying to import illicit drugs, our tip is don’t hide it in something that kind of looks like giant bags of drugs and will definitely be inspected as a result… Just a thought.

Our partners at Australian Border Force located approximately 20kg of methamphetamine, concealed in Kaolin soft clay and impregnated in towels when examining a shipment entering Sydney on 19 November, 2025.

Towels and soft clay - it sounds like someone was planning a spa day! This mild clay is a great option for both dry and sensitive skin. The meth…not so much.

The drugs have been seized by the AFP, and we’d love to speak to their owner/s to chat about spa treatments, jail sentences etc.

If this is yours, please reach out, we’re happy to host you at Spa de Jail.

If anyone knows anything about the importation of illicit drugs, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at https://crimestoppers.com.au/ Information can be provided anonymously.
