ISLAND MAGIC – TYRE ADVICE

Only a few days until 30 cars hit the circuit for the annual Island Magic. Competitors will be aware of some tyre issues at Phillip Island since it was resurfaced. These issues have affected all types of tyres. Our friends at Tyre & Suspension have some advice – particularly for the heavier and higher horsepower cars.

Setup Checklist:
1. Camber Settings:
o Target negative camber: 3 ¾ to 4 degrees.
o Maximum allowed camber: 4 ¼ degrees.
o This range should give you good contact patch optimization while minimising uneven wear during the bedding process.
2. Initial Tyre Pressure:
o Don't leave the pits with less than 23 psi cold.
o Expect tyre pressure to increase as the tires warm up, potentially rising by 5 to 8 psi during the bedding-in cycle. Monitor this closely after each session.
Bedding-in Procedure:
1. Warm-up Phase:
o First 1-3 laps (after out lap): Start with gentle acceleration and braking (straight line only). Progressively going quicker (70% -80%-90%). Focus on warming up the tyres without pushing them hard and leaning on them. The aim is to gradually bring the tyre temperature up to operating levels. After three laps back off and give the tyres a recovery lap. If you wish, do a couple more laps around 80 % and then back off and do another recovery lap.
o Check Temperatures: After initial warm-up, do a quick check of tyre surface temperatures to ensure even heat distribution.
2. Avoid sudden or aggressive inputs, especially hard braking or sharp steering, to prevent flat spots and premature wear.
3. Focus on smooth corner entries and exits to let the tyres naturally scuff off the release agent.
4. Temperature Checks: Ideally, use a tyre pyrometer to check temperatures across the tread width to ensure even heat distribution. Aim for a 10-15°c spread from inner to outer edge.

We've got a grid to fill....

Expressions of Interest for the 2024 IPRA Bathurst Cup are now open.

Today, all of you who are IPRA members should receive an email from your State IPRA committee inviting you to apply for a place as part of the Bathurst 6 Hour support category next Easter (March 29 - 31).

Remember: we're an amateur category and all of this is done by volunteers with day jobs. If you don't get an email today, don't despair. It is not first in best dressed.

The grid will be selected from the Expressions of Interest next month based on a range of factors, including getting competitors from every State and the NT.

If you don't get the online form from your local committee today or tomorrow, write to us at [email protected] and we will get it sorted out.

Also, a reminder that Expressions of Interest are open for the 2024 Yokohama IPRA Nationals at Hidden Valley next July.

2024 Nationals and Bathurst update

There's been a strong flow of Expressions of Interest for the 2024 Yokohama Motorsport Tyres Australia IPRA Nationals at Hidden Valley next July. Competitors across Australia are looking for a huge week in Darwin where IPRA will be the main drawcard of the weekend.

While interest in the Nationals continues to grow, IPRA AUS is pleased to announce that EoIs for the 2024 IPRA Bathurst Cup next Easter will open this Thursday.

The Bathurst Cup – which will include six sessions on track – will cost $2900, which includes a marquee. Heads up: a deposit of $1500 will be required with the EoI to help IPRA AUS pay for the grid and other costs that must be met in the coming months.

All EoIs will be reviewed to select the final field early in December.

Look out for the Invitation for Expressions of Interest on social media or in your email inbox this Thursday.

IMPROVED PRODUCTION CONFIRMED TO RUN AT BATHURST EASTER 2024

Big year ahead with Yokohama Nationals to follow at Hidden Valley in July

October 6, 2023 – Australia’s strongest grassroots production car racing category, Improved Production, will return to Bathurst at Easter next year.

The Improved Production Racing Association of Australia (IPRA Aus) has accepted an invitation from the Bathurst Hi-Tec Oils 6 Hour promoter, Australian Racing Group, to enter a full grid of 55 cars for the event.

Improved Production last raced at Bathurst in 2019 when the category fielded a full grid as a popular support category for the 6 Hour.

The promise of a Bathurst event sets up Improved Production for a huge 2024. A few months later - tentatively Mid July TBC - the Yokohama IPRA Nationals return to Hidden Valley in the NT. Plans are being finalised for a low-cost entry to the Nationals, as well as tow money being on offer to interstate competitors. Further details and Expressions of Interest for the Nationals will be released soon.

Announcing the Bathurst event, IPRA Aus National Administrator Brett Watters said Improved Production’s return to Mount Panorama was recognition of the popularity of the diverse grassroots category.

“Like all racers, our members love The Mountain and we can’t wait to get back there,” Watters said. “We thank the Australian Racing Group for the opportunity to run again.

“Our popularity stems from the fact we run just about every configuration of mass-produced car. From under 2 litre early model cars to rotaries to big cube V8s to modern turbos and everything in between. Front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive. You name it and you’ll probably see it on the grid at Bathurst next Easter.”

Watters said details were yet to be confirmed but that Expressions of Interest would open early November. With plans to air all the action of the weekend live, IPRA Aus is seeking a naming rights sponsor for the prestigious event and Watters invited potential sponsors to contact him or State IPRA officials.

All the details on the 2024 Yokohama Nationals and the Bathurst 6 Hour will be available in the coming weeks on the IPRA Aus website and through IPRA’s State committees.
