The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular religious and cultural festivals. Held annually in Kandy,it culminates around the Esala full moon. The word perahera simply means procession.
At its heart is the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, enshrined at Sri Dalada Maligawa (the Temple of the Tooth). The procession is an act of veneration, and it also incorporates traditions associated with four guardian deities.
What you actually see
As evening falls, Kandy becomes a completely different place. Processions wind through the illuminated streets with:
🥁 Huge ensembles of traditional Kandyan drummers and flautists
💃 Kandyan dancers, acrobats and other performers
🔥 Fire dancers and whip-crackers
🐘 Decorated elephants and tuskers, with the ceremonial tusker traditionally occupying the most important position
🏮 Elaborate costumes, torches and lights against the backdrop of Kandy’s hills and lake
The spectacle grows in scale as the festival progresses, with the final processions being particularly elaborate.
Why it feels so special
What makes Perahera extraordinary isn’t just the visual spectacle. It’s a living religious ceremony rather than a performance put on primarily for tourists. Pilgrims come to pay their respects, while musicians, dancers, temple officials and families participate in traditions that have been passed down through generations.
It also brings together several layers of Sri Lankan history: Buddhist devotion, Kandyan royal traditions, indigenous performing arts and Hindu-influenced shrine traditions. Sri Lanka Tourism describes the festival as a culmination of more than 1,700 years of history, tradition and craftsmanship.

That means you can spend the afternoon exploring Kandy’s temples and old streets and then, after dark, find yourself sitting among thousands of people as drums echo through the city and the procession slowly passes by. It’s one of those occasions when the destination itself feels transformed by the event.

We recently did a 4 week trip through Scandinavia, 2 weeks on the Camino in Spain and finished with a week sailing in Croatia. Deb was so amazing in organising the whole trip. Flights, accommodation, breakfasts, transfers, and activities. It all ran so smoothly! The app was super helpful and Deb was always available to contact whenever we needed it. We honestly feel very grateful for all that she did and will definitely be using her to book further trips. I can highly recommend Deb she put together an awesome trip for us to create memories that we will have forever ! ❤️
