Over 40 years ago, Graham and Wendy Erhart started a small vegetable seedling depot in the heart of Queensland with a simple belief - that the quality of every crop begins with the seedling.

Today, Withcott Seedlings is Australia’s leading supplier of vegetable and tree seedlings, supporting commercial growers across the country and contributing to Australia’s fresh food production, timber industry and carbon sequestration initiatives.

From supplying high-quality vegetable seedlings to Australian farmers to growing trees for large-scale planting projects, our focus remains the same: producing strong, healthy plants that perform in the field.

Four decades on, the scale may have grown, but the founding belief hasn’t changed.

Because great crops start with great seedlings.

Leeks are a member of the Allium family, alongside onions, garlic, and shallots, and are valued for their mild, sweet onion flavour and versatility in the kitchen.

A staple in many cuisines, leeks are commonly used in soups, stews, pies, and slow-cooked dishes where their gentle flavour can shine without overpowering other ingredients.

Beyond their culinary appeal, leeks are also a nutritious addition to the garden and the plate:
• A natural source of vitamins A, C and K
• Rich in antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds
• High in fibre and supportive of digestive health

Our leek seedlings are grown for strong establishment and consistent growth, giving growers a reliable start for the cooler growing season.

They perform best when planted in the right conditions:
☀️ Full sun to partial sun
🌱 Well-prepared soil enriched with organic matter
💧 Consistent moisture for steady growth and tender stems

From hearty winter soups to classic potato and leek dishes, leeks remain a timeless vegetable that rewards patience in the garden and flavour in the kitchen.

Where we grow matters.

The nursery’s isolated, hilly location provides natural protection from external contaminants, creating an ideal environment for raising strong, healthy seedlings.

But it doesn’t stop there. The site has been carefully designed to maximise sunlight, reduce soil erosion and preserve the native trees that surround the nursery.

Our state-of-the-art water recycling system, including reverse osmosis filtration and interconnected on-site dams, ensures a secure year-round water supply - with every drop carefully managed.

At Withcott Seedlings, growing well starts with caring for the land beneath it.

Growing the future of Australian agriculture takes the right partnerships.

Four years ago, Withcott Seedlings began an exciting collaboration with ADM Capital’s Cibus II fund, a London-based investment group focused on sustainable food and agriculture.

Since then, the partnership has helped us continue evolving how we grow - introducing new technology and refining systems across the nursery so we can deliver even stronger, healthier seedlings to Australian growers.

Some of the advancements include:

🌱 Automation across key processes such as seeding, sorting and grafting
💧 Advanced watering and feeding systems to optimise plant health and resource use
🌿 Increased production capacity while maintaining the quality and consistency our growers rely on.

For us, it’s not just about growing more - it’s about growing smarter and more sustainably, ensuring Australian farmers have access to seedlings ready to perform in an ever-changing environment.

We’re proud to be working alongside partners who share our vision for the future of food and agriculture.

In commercial growing, what you keep out can be just as important as what you put in.

At Withcott Seedlings, biosecurity starts right at the nursery gate. From foot and wheel baths at entry points, to the sterilisation of trays, racks and crates, every step is designed to minimise risk.

Our seedlings are also grown on raised aluminium benches, keeping plants off the ground and helping prevent contamination from soil-borne pests and diseases.

It’s the kind of attention to detail that helps protect your crop long before it ever reaches your farm.

For home gardeners, what you plant your seedlings in matters just as much as the seedlings themselves.

Healthy soil gives young plants the best possible start - providing the nutrients, drainage and structure they need to establish strong roots.

When planting seedlings at home, look for a high-quality vegetable or seed raising mix that drains well but still retains moisture. Mixing in well-aged compost can also improve soil structure and add valuable nutrients to support early growth.

A few simple tips:
🌱 Choose a quality soil or potting mix
🌱 Add compost to boost nutrients and improve soil health
🌱 Ensure good drainage in garden beds or pots
🌱 Water gently while roots establish
🌱 Avoid compacting the soil around young plants

Strong seedlings + healthy soil = the best chance of a thriving garden.

As the weather cools, hearty soups start making their way back onto the menu. This classic recipe highlights leeks and parsley, two crops grown by Withcott Seedlings, bringing warmth and comfort to the autumn kitchen.

These crops thrive in cooler conditions and are valued for both their flavour and nutrition in seasonal cooking.

Beyond their versatility, they also bring plenty of goodness to the plate:
• Leeks are rich in fibre and antioxidants
• Parsley is packed with vitamins A, C and K
• Together they add depth, freshness, and balance to simple dishes

Warm, nourishing, and full of garden flavour - a perfect reminder that cooler seasons bring some of the most comforting harvests.

With strong seedlings and the right growing conditions, crops like leeks and herbs can keep kitchens supplied with fresh ingredients throughout the cooler months.

At Withcott Seedlings, we believe the future of agriculture starts with hands-on learning.

We were proud to support the Year 12 Agricultural Science students at Toowoomba Grammar School, supplying commercial lettuce varieties for their hydroponics trials.

Throughout the project, students investigated how different growing conditions - from pH levels to light exposure - can impact plant growth, root mass and overall crop yield. By collecting and analysing real data, they gained valuable insight into the kinds of decisions growers make every day in commercial production.

It’s fantastic to see the next generation of agricultural leaders exploring real-world production systems and building practical knowledge that will serve them well in the industry.

A big well done to the students and their teachers for such a thoughtful and practical project - we’re always happy to support initiatives that connect classrooms with the realities of modern agriculture. 🌱
