If you Don't Know, Don't Go.
With the school holidays and Christmas Season upon us, it's the perfect time to invite guests to your home. But that means it's more important than ever to remember Driveway Safety.
Three children are unintentionally run over every week in Australia - mostly in the driveway of their own home. These incidents aren't limited to large or older vehicles; sedans, hatchbacks, and vehicles equipped with reversing cameras and collision avoidance technology can all feature in driveway run over incidents.
The most effective way to prevent these incidents is to Supervise, Separate, and See.
Supervise
Children may not know the danger that vehicles can pose. Supervision means more than just watching; it can also mean holding their hand or holding them close when near vehicles.
If you're the only person able to supervise and have to move a vehicle, place the child securely in the vehicle with you while you move it.
Separate
Don't let children use the driveway or other road-related areas as a play area. Instead, create safe play areas for your children by fencing off the driveway from play areas.
Make access to the driveway from the house and play areas difficult for young children by using security doors and self-closing gates.
See
The best way to know if it's safe to move a vehicle is to see that it's safe. Always walk around the vehicle before moving it, especially around the rear bumper (or front, if driving forward). Don't rely on parking sensors or a reversing camera if your vehicle has one fitted; you may not notice a small child until it is too late to stop.
Always make sure you know that your children are in a safe place and supervised before you move a vehicle. If you Don’t Know, Don’t Go.
