China Shipping Update: Typhoons Continue to Cause Delays 🚢

Ongoing typhoon activity across China is creating port congestion, vessel delays and schedule changes, particularly around major export hubs including Shanghai and Ningbo.

For Australian importers, this could mean longer transit times, rolled cargo and changes to ETAs over the coming weeks.

Typhoon Dolphin made landfall on China’s east coast on Sunday, bringing strong winds, torrential rainfall, and a heightened risk of flooding and landslides.

Port and Terminal operations across Shanghai, Ningbo Zhoushan, and other locations in Zhejianghave been suspended or restricted. Reopening and recovery timeframes will depend on local conditions and safety assessments.

This disruption comes at a time when Chinese ports are already experiencing congestion. Shanghai is currently reporting berthing delays of approximately 3 to 9 days, depending on the terminal, together with high yard utilisation & growing vessel queues.

Ningbo Zhoushan & several other major Chinese gateways are also experiencing congestion, schedule disruption, and pressure on terminal capacity.

Typhoon Dolphin is therefore expected to place further pressure on an already congested port network. Customers with cargo moving through China should prepare for:

🌪 Vessel bunching & extended berth waiting times
🌪 Rolled bookings & missed transshipment connections

Client Advisory: Shipping Delays from China – Typhoon Dolphin Update
We would like to provide an update on the current shipping situation from China as the industry continues to recover from recent severe weather events. While ports have been working through congestion caused by previous typhoons, Typhoon Dolphin is now creating additional disruption across parts of the Western Pacific and East China Sea. The storm is expected to impact vessel schedules as it tracks towards Japan's Ryukyu Islands before moving towards the East China coast.

As a precaution, shipping lines are adjusting vessel routes, revising port rotations, and implementing schedule changes to ensure the safety of vessels and crews. These disruptions are expected to create further congestion at major export hubs, including Shanghai, Ningbo and nearby East China ports, with flow-on effects across regional transhipment ports.

What this means for your shipments
- Delays to vessel departures and arrivals.
- Increased likelihood of cargo being rolled to the next available sailing.
- Ongoing congestion at major Chinese ports.
- Longer container turnaround times.
- Potential delays to connecting services and inland transport as carriers recover schedules.
