Congratulations to Sandy Day and Peter Muscat, our joint recipients of the NSS Employee Excellence Award for the month of August!

Over the past 2.5 months, Sandy and Peter have demonstrated outstanding commitment while working on a major cargo cleaning project, consistently maintaining high standards of safety, reliability and productivity despite challenging conditions and tight deadlines.

Their initiative, resilience and willingness to go above and beyond have played an important role in keeping the project moving and delivering a high standard of work from start to finish.

The NSS Employee Excellence Awards celebrate our employees who go above and beyond what’s expected of them, embodying NSS values of Safety, Productivity, Innovation and Customer Service.

A well-deserved congratulations to Sandy and Peter on this recognition.

Count the handovers between the ship's side and the front door.

A container landing at a capital city port passes through a stevedore, an empty container park, a transport operator, a warehouse and a rail terminal before it reaches the business that ordered the goods.

Five separate companies, five contracts, five things that all need to keep working.

That structure holds up fine until one part of it stops. The administration of one of the country's largest container logistics operators this month has put the question in front of a lot of cargo owners for the first time.

In October the International Maritime Organization votes on a carbon price for ocean-going shipping.

The framework would cover every vessel above 5,000 gross tonnes and set binding limits on the greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels.

Townsville's exporters sell into Asia on delivered cost, where a few dollars a tonne decides whether a cargo moves at all. A charge attached to fuel has historically ended up in the freight rate rather than staying with the shipowner.

Nobody in North Queensland gets a vote in that room. What can be influenced is everything that happens before the ship sails.

Most of Townsville is winding down for the weekend, but down at the port the work carries on.

Ships arrive on their own schedule, so the job gets planned around the vessel rather than the calendar. Our crews keep freight moving through North Queensland whatever day it lands on.

Over fifty years on, that part has not changed at NSS.

Queensland construction activity is forecast to peak at $75 billion in 2027-28. Industry estimates put the state's workforce shortfall at around 35,000.

When several major projects chase the same limited pool of crane crews, earthmoving contractors and transport suppliers at once, timelines stop being something anyone can rely on.

The freight task begins well ahead of a site becoming active. Regional capacity has to be built here, in advance, rather than assumed once a contract is signed.

Congratulations to Mark Bacon, our NSS Employee Excellence Award winner!

Mark is a Shift Manager and in just eight months has become one of the steadiest planners in our operation. His forward planning anticipates resource needs before they turn into last-minute changes, while his eye for detail catches errors before they ever reach the floor.

Beyond his rostered hours he stays back to work through problems during operations, refine toolbox talks and support cross-shift teams, earning trust right across the business.

These awards are all about recognising the people who live our values of Safety, Productivity, Innovation and Customer Service.

Mark, you absolutely deserve this!

The new crossloading facility at Alpha is a reminder about how regional freight networks actually improve. A facility does not need to move enormous volumes, it needs to sit at the right point on a route to change what is possible.

The same thinking sits behind how NSS approaches freight in North Queensland. The NSS Logistics Facility gives customers somewhere to store, stage and manage freight as part of a broader supply chain rather than treating each movement as an isolated event.

We sat down with Tayla Connolly last week to talk about what she is building in Townsville schools.

Tayla Connolly started Careers in Gear to work on the front end of that problem instead of the back end of it. Eight Townsville schools have been through in the past six months, spending a day inside the depots, workshops and warehouses that keep the region moving.

NSS is proud to be one of the first sponsors behind it.

There's a new truck on the wharf at the Port of Townsville, and its job is to keep everything else moving.

NSS has commissioned a Euro 6 Fuso Canter 815, a custom-built service truck carrying 2,000 litres of diesel along with field tools, lubricants and diagnostic equipment.

Our forklifts, loaders and transfer vehicles all work to a vessel schedule. Instead of pulling a machine off the job to refuel, the fuel and the technician now come to it.

A small addition to the fleet. A real difference to how a shift runs.
