There’s something most people don't know until they've already booked a removalist: in Australia, there's no licence required to start a moving business. Anyone with a truck and an ABN can call themselves a professional mover.

That's not a knock on every operator out there, but it does mean the responsibility for checking who you're trusting with your belongings sits with you. Insurance, training and proper handling techniques aren't guaranteed just because a business has a logo on the side of a van.

It's part of why we invest in training our crew properly, run tracking on our jobs, and carry comprehensive transit insurance in-house. Not because we have to, but because in an industry with no rulebook, someone has to hold the standard.

Settlement and moving don't need to be the same day. If possible, giving yourself a buffer on either side can take a lot of the pressure off both.

Spring tends to bring a run of new listings across the Coast, and settlements from those sales usually land six to eight weeks later. If your sale or purchase is moving through that process now, this is a good time to start thinking about your actual move date rather than leaving it until the week before.

A few things are worth locking in early: whether you need cleaners in before or after your old place settles, how much notice your bank or agent needs for keys, and whether storage might be needed to bridge any gap between the two dates. Getting this sequence right early is what keeps the whole thing stress-free instead of dealing with a scramble in the final week.

Your fridge needs a 24-hour head start on moving day. Most people realise that at 9pm the night before.

The freezer needs defrosting, and the pooling water needs somewhere to go. After arrival, the fridge should stand upright for a few hours before being switched back on.

And don’t forget the washing machine. It has transit bolts that need refitting, or the drum can damage itself on the road.

None of it is difficult. All of it is easier with notice.

The home office is now the room that decides when moving week ends.

Work from home and you can be back on video calls the morning after moving day… that’s if the office travels right.

Monitors boxed upright in proper cartons. Cables photographed before disconnection, then bagged by device. The desk reassembled first at the new place rather than last.

Going from a family home at Golden Beach into a retirement village at Aroona is a move measured in more than kilometres.

One job like this from earlier in the year stays clearly in mind. Decades in this house, and a garden they’d grown from nothing.

Farewelled over a slow cup of tea while we worked around her at whatever pace the morning needed.
