Sunshine Coast fun facts. ☀️

The oldest building in the Sunshine Coast that is still currently in use is the Landsborough hotel at Landsborough.

Landsborough Hotel was built in 1888 as the Mellum Club Hotel. In 1914 the entire building was moved to its current Cribb Street location on skids pulled by bullock teams. Remarkably, Sunshine Coast Council records that it continued trading each night while it was being moved.

“Sunshine Coast” only became official in 1967 — after 8 years of arguing
Before that, the region was officially called the “Near North Coast” (just meaning “near Brisbane”). Three separate shire councils (Maroochy, Noosa, Landsborough) had to each vote to adopt “Sunshine Coast,” which they did in November 1966, with the name gazetted on 22 July 1967.

Maroochydore’s name comes from an Aboriginal word, believed to derive from “murukutchi-dha,” meaning “the place of the red bills”  (likely referring to black swans), recorded during an 1842 expedition.
