New data shows carriers have been taking most of the fuel price rise hit themselves.

Diesel went up 36% after the Strait of Hormuz closed – while the average freight rates per kilometre on Loadshift rose just 16%.

That gap came out of carriers’ margins – owner-operators and small fleet businesses who kept Australia's freight moving through the worst fuel crisis in years.

It’s something worth remembering.

The BBC has published a deep dive into the diesel crisis hitting Australian freight – and two of our own are in it.

Loadshift's Alex Randall told the BBC that the government's billion-dollar loan offer won't cut it for small carriers. And Terry Snell, 68, four decades on the road, says he's cut his runs from weekly to fortnightly just to make the numbers work.

We've been on this story for weeks now.

The message hasn't changed. Small operators don't need more debt. They need direct help with fuel costs, and they need it yesterday. Trucks are coming off the road and the supply chain is feeling it.

Diesel theft from trucking yards. That's where this crisis has got to.

Our carrier Madilyn Lostroh from Mal's Haulage had diesel stolen from her yard. She's not alone – we're hearing similar reports from operators across the network.

As our Alex Randall told The Guardian: "“Our drivers are already planning routes around which servos might have stock. Now they’ve got to worry about what happens to the fuel sitting in their own yard overnight.”

Heads up as we head into the long weekend.

Loadshift will be running with minimal support over the Easter break starting tomorrow. Some delays may come through on updates and finance processing on Good Friday and Easter Monday, with everything back to normal from Tuesday 7 April.

Reacting to the government’s decision to halve the fuel excise, the ‘logistics guru’ told the Daily Mail:
“It's good they've finally moved, but halving it when drivers are paying $3.60 a litre and getting stranded at empty servos is a half-measure for a full-blown crisis.”

“Twenty-six cents doesn't cover the gap when your fuel bill has doubled."

We don’t want freight companies to collapse, drivers to be stranded and Aussies to be slugged with sky-high prices.

Loadshift will continue to call for the excise and GST on diesel to be fully suspended until the fuel crisis is resolved.

The government just announced a halving of the fuel excise for three months. 26.3 cents off a litre.

Loadshift has been calling for action for weeks. We called for the full suspension. We got half.

It's a start. But at $3.60 a litre in parts of outback WA, a 26-cent cut doesn't come close. Drivers are still getting stranded at empty servos. Mining sites are still getting 3% of their fuel orders.

Small operators are still bleeding.

We'll keep pushing for the full suspension of the diesel excise and GST until this crisis is over.

This is Rob Cook. He's a Loadshift driver who's been stranded in outback South Australia for more than two days because the servo ran out of diesel.

It's the SECOND TIME it's happened to him on a single run from Perth to Melbourne.

Seven trucks were stuck with him at Ceduna, four more at Bordertown. His fuel costs for the trip have doubled from $5,000 to $10,000.

This is what the diesel crisis looks like on the ground. Drivers keeping the country moving, left high and dry with no way of knowing which servos have fuel and which don't.

The diesel excise should be suspended IMMEDIATELY.

A truck driver from SA just shared his diesel receipt. $3,500 to fill his tanks.

Nearly $1,000 of that was tax – excise and GST on a resource the country is running out of.
