Mort & Co was re-established in 1997 by Charlie Mort following the earlier registration of the company by his relative, Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, in 1843. Since its relaunch, the business has grown to become one of the largest and most experienced managers of lot fed cattle in Australia, and a leading exporter of premium Australian beef. Operating an integrated vertical supply chain model, Mort & Co

produces quality Australian beef through the careful control of each aspect of the business, which currently includes cattle procurement, backgrounding, transportation, farming, lot feeding, beef processing and marketing. Currently, Mort & Co own two feedlots which have a combined capacity of 90,000 head (hd), turning over in excess of 215,000 cattle annually. The company continues to demonstrate an unwavering appetite for progression, maintaining a pattern of strong growth while international demand for Australian beef continues to rise. Home of the award-winning Phoenix Beef range, which encompasses a medium fed Black Angus program and two long fed Wagyu brands, Mort & Co is widely recognised as a distinguished beef supplier, harnessing the best of the Australian environment to bring high quality, succulent and tender beef to tables around the world. MORT’s BIGGEST MORNING TEA

Almost 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Big statistics like that require Big support for research.

Mort & Co staff have been hosting Australias Biggest Morning Tea for nearly 30 years, raising money through raffles and prizes each year.

From home baking (Karen’s melting moments get double donations) to plants, wine and books - the team donate a pool of gifts, and then donate money to win them back.

This year might have been our biggest yet 🤝

GOLF, ROWING & GOOD MATES
Amazing what a day on the green, a Bloody Mary and a Phoenix Wagyu burger will do for your mental health 🤝

After an incredible 4th annual Mort’s Mates Golf Day, we are thrilled to be donating nearly $30,000 to our mates at Outback Rowing Australia.

Thanks to our sponsors FKG Group, Hooper Accountants, NRG services, Fodderlink, Mort & Co Fertilisers and The Royal Hotel, we can help bring rowing to the outback, and in turn improve mental health.

Congratulations to the day’s winning team, Joe Roberts, Matt Roberts, Shawn Fletcher and Geraint Hudson.

Considering a Mort’s Mates Rowing team… taking nominations now 🚣

BEHIND THE BUNK
We welcomed the Australian Wagyu Association tour to Grassdale Feedlot today.

The group of 100+ is travelling around Queensland this year, and the Mort & Co team (Wagyu’s included) were proud to show off our Grassdale site today.

The touring crew heard all about the innovations and systems in place at Australia’s largest feedlot and, most importantly, met the people responsible for keeping the cattle happy.

Plenty of great wagyu companies to visit in Queensland, they headed off with a belly full thanks to Undisputed BBQ… off to Chinchilla tonight.

CLASSY 👏
Both of Mort & Co’s Phoenix Beef Wagyu brands have been awarded Class Champion at the Australian Wagyu Association Awards overnight.

Judged alongside Australia’s top wagyu beef brands, The Phoenix was awarded Class Champion for 2026 in the Crossbred Wagyu, while Master Selection took Class Champion in the Purebred Wagyu category.

Congratulations to our producer partners - Kevin and Jude Brennan of Chinchilla who bred The Phoenix product, and to Reid and Julie Muirhead of Muirhead Pastoral Co responsible for the purebred Wagyu.

A great reason to celebrate as the awards season for 2026 kicks off 🤝

"I think it's only fair to say I've employed a lot of good people, the business was a bit loose at times, so that's why we needed to employ good people to make sure we did the right thing.

I think it's a great business and I'm very proud of it, but yes, there's time to do other things. Nothing lasts forever."

Charlie Mort sat down with LAWD consultant Danny Thomas and Ben Dobbin at Rural Queensland Today this morning to discuss the sale of Mort & Co. Listen on spotify 👇

It is one of Australia's greatest agriculture stories, built up over nearly 30 years, but it's time for a new chapter.

This week Mort & Co will go on the market, following a decision by its board of directors to sell while the industry is strong and global demand for grainfed beef continues to grow.

“We go to market today as a highly respected Agricultural business – with a reputation for quality and trusted values. Mort & Co is known as a leader in the industry - built through innovation, courage and resilience – but most importantly through the commitment from our people and producer partners,” said CEO Stephen O'Brien.

Charlie Mort started the business in January 1997, custom feeding for graziers, and grew it into the success it is today - a vertically integrated supply chain servicing Australia’s largest feedlot, Grassdale.

A supply chain that includes a fleet of 45 prime movers, a cotton seed de-hulling and de-oiling plant and five award winning Angus and Wagyu beef brands which are exported across the globe. This is all possible with a team of 200+ employees and partnerships with more than 2,000 vendors supplying cattle directly to Mort & Co.

It is, without a doubt, a company built on innovation and strong relationships.

The sale process will begin immediately, with expressions of interest closing at the end of May. Details available through the LAWD team.

Imagine a gender equal world.

A world free of bias, stereotypes, discrimination.

A world that is diverse, equitable, inclusive.

A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

We are not there yet, but together we can forge gender equality.
